He decided to go for an experimental program he believed would cure his cancer, but was actually a cover story for a Weapon X program trying to create supermutants. He was given a drug that was supposed to accelerate mutation when under durress and then tortured in order to do so. After what felt like like ages of torture (Wade having no way of keeping track of time) he mutated- while technicality it saved him, the rapid regeneration caused his cancer to spread aggressively, leaving him horrendously scarred and disfigured. Empowered and enraged, Wade broke free and destoryed the facility, trying to kill it's leader (A man called Ajax, named Francis) for revenge and setting the place ablaze while he was at it. The wreckage impaled Wade, trapping him there, and he awoke the next day to find his body had regenerated despite full self-immolation. With his disfigured visage, Wade became extremely insecure and believed Vanessa wouldn't love him anymore. Wade tracks down and kills Francis later on. Later, Vanessa was killed by some of Francis's goons for revenge, knowing they couldn't kill Wade they targetted the woman he loved instead. Wade was broken for a long time, he gave up on eveything and tried to commit suicide various times in various ways. Instead, he ended up helping a mutant kid named Russel and nearly died permanently. With the help of a time-travel device he aquired, he went back in time and Saved Vanessa. They were together again for a while, and Wade was greatful, but things weren't perfect. Eventually, Vanessa left him for his dangerous lifestyle coming back on her and his habit of keeping secrets, being reckless, and having unreliable work. Powers: Superhuman agility, durability, stamina, and reflexes. Master assassin and skilled marksman, swordsman, martial artist, and hand-to-hand combatant. Extended longevity and extreme healing factor. Wade literally cannot die, and can regenerate from any chunks left behind after the most mutilating of injuries. Expert at distracting opponents. Wade is highly resistant to most drugs and alcohol, it is extremely difficult for him to become intoxicated; Some drugs and tranquilizers still work on him in large enough doses. Deadpool is less sensitive to pain than most because he has grown used to it. He still feels pain, but it needs to be extreme for it to disturb him. Wade's psychosis is worsened by his constantly regenerating brain, but he uses it to his advantage to learn things about his enemies he shouldn't be able to know. While Wade is technically immortal, he has died and revived numerous times and has had and on-again off-again romance with Death herself.
