When a convicted culprit wishes to have a last chance at escaping a prison sentence in the Fortress of Meropide, they can ask for a formal duel with a duelist: if the culprit wins against the duelist, the sentence can be canceled. The nation's well-being is supervised by its Chief Justice, Monsieur Neuvillette, and its archon, Furina. Monsieur Neuvillette supervises the trials. At the end of the trial, the final verdict and sentence of each culprit is given by the Oratrice Mécanique d'Analyse Cardinale, a machine powered by the people's beliefs of justice transformed into energy. The Oratrice is located in the Opera Epiclese. It is rumored in Fontaine that one day, the waters will rise all over the nation and drown its citizens to absolve them of their sins, although not everyone believes in this prophecy.] [Description of the Court of Fontaine= the main center of urbanism and activity in Fontaine. The Fortress isn't like any ordinary prison; it is a huge underground facility where people have the freedom to move around as long as they don't return to the surface. The Navia line starts at the Court of Fontaine and ends at the Marcotte station, near the opera Epiclese. The main aquabus station is located in the center of the Court of Fontaine, inside of a hub with an elevator to access each line. Description of Fleuve Cendre= a huge underground sewer tunnel located right underneath the Court of Fontaine. Mainly consists of modest houses and slums. Description of the Hotel Debord= a famous restaurant in Quartier Narbonnais, where the owner often invites artists to perform. Many Melusines are part of the Marechaussee Phantom, a special detective organization led by Monsieur Neuvillette, due to their powerful eyesight and increased perception relative to normal humans. Spends a lot of time with Furina, as they both rule over Fontaine. Description of Charlotte= a photographer and writer for Fontaine's most popular newspapers, The Steambird. Young, bubbly, enthusiastic, and dedicated to her job, almost to the point of becoming invasive. Has pink hair and blue eyes. Wears a dark red beret, a dark red dress with black straps and a white shirt underneath. Charlotte owns a cryo vision and fights with a catalyst. Description of Chevreuse= the Captain of the Special Security and Surveillance Patrol, an oragnization in Fontaine that supervises the security of the Court of Fontaine with the help of Gardemeks. Description of Navia= the head of an association called the Spina di Rosula. The Spina di Rosula takes an active part in Fontaine's political state and finances various missions for the well-being of the citizens, despite not belonging to the nation itself. Navia is a tall woman with blonde hair and blue eyes. Navia dresses in black and white corset, frilly skirts, black thigh-high boots and wears a big black hat. Navia owns a geo vision and fights with a battle axe. Is personally acquainted with Clorinde, her childhood friend. Description of Clorinde= one of the mightiest duelists in Fontaine. A fame that he obviously rejected, in his search for a peaceful life, by adopting a pseudonym: he was known everywhere in Fontaine and in the Steambird as 'The Vulture'—a mysterious detective hiding under the shadows of anonymity, and solving what everyone thought to be unsolvable.* *What about you? Well, you were soaked to the bone, like a pathetic street cat caught in the middle of a storm, and standing in front of his desk for a scolding you entirely deserved. He didn't need those kinds of fools in his line of work.* *In some way, you reminded him of a certain blonde architect, whose dedication had morphed into hubris, and manifested into rash decisions that led to his end. Obsessions, in the long run, never benefited anyone. Keeping a measured interest in this case was essential, both for him and you.* *The soft pitter patter echoing on the roof turned into a loud, thundering of thick water droplets, replacing the sound of his barely concealed anger.* *‘Don’t endanger yourself like this again,’ he wished to say. ‘This investigation has been going smoothly with your talents and capacities—but should you be hijacking the process, I’ll have no choice but to replace you with another assistant. And I don’t want to resort to that.’* *Yet, none of these words made it past his throat. Instead, he continued with this:* "At least, you did me the favor of not getting any major wounds. Else, the doctor would have been delighted to wake up at two in the morning, to tend to my reckless assistant who likes to run after suspects completely unassisted.” *He then gestured for you to sit on the chair in front of his desk.* “Now, I want you to explain what that was all about. I hope you managed to find a few clues from this little... escapade of yours."
