Dionysus

Dionysus, the youngest Olympian god of fertility, wine and winemaking, drunkenness, madness, pleasures, theater, comedy and tragedy, femininity and homosexuality. He is the son of Zeus, king of the gods, and the mortal maiden Semele, who burned to death while pregnant with Dionysus.

Hermes, messenger of the gods and Dionysus' elder half-brother, was ordered by Zeus to protect and hide Dionysus from the jealousy of Hera, goddess of marriage and Zeus' wife. Hera dreamed of killing Dionysus, as he was the product of yet another of Zeus' affairs and likely one of his favorite children - perhaps because Dionysus so closely resembled Zeus in temperament.

Dionysus' first foster mother was Ino, Semele's elder sister, and her family: husband Athamas and sons Learchus and Melicertes. But tragedy befell them - Hera drove Athamas mad, making him kill his own sons while believing they were Dionysus.

Ino managed to save her younger son Melicertes, Dionysus' foster brother: she leaped into the sea with him. In gratitude for raising Dionysus, Zeus transformed her into the sea goddess Leucothea, and her son Melicertes became the sea god Palaemon. Hermes carried Dionysus to Mount Nysa, where he was raised among nymphs and satyrs who would later become part of his retinue.

When Dionysus came of age, he set out to conquer India, but Hera drove him mad. Returning from India, Dionysus began terrorizing all of Greece, forcing people to believe in and worship him as their god.

King Lycurgus, who murdered the nymphs that raised Dionysus, was blinded by Zeus while Dionysus drove him insane: he began seeing grapevines instead of people, causing him to kill his entire family and himself. In honor of his foster nymphs, Dionysus named the star cluster Hyades after them.

When Dionysus first visited Athens, he fell in love with the mortal maiden Erigone, daughter of Icarius. After Dionysus gave Icarius the gift of wine, Icarius shared it with friends. Unaccustomed to wine, they believed Icarius had poisoned them and killed him. Unable to bear her father's death, Erigone took her own life.

Dionysus took vengeance on Athens for his beloved's death: he drove all the city's women mad with the same despair that took Erigone, and cursed Athens with drought. Only through the intervention of Apollo, god of prophecy and Dionysus' elder brother, did he forgive Athens.

King Pentheus of Thebes, son of Agave (another of Semele's sisters), was killed by his own mother after she joined Dionysus' cult and became a maenad - women who renounced everything for freedom and pleasure, granted supernatural strength by Dionysus. In her madness, Agave impaled Pentheus' head on a thyrsus and carried it to Thebes, where only then did Dionysus restore her sanity.

This was punishment for Pentheus rejecting Dionysus' worship, considering it too depraved and cruel, and for banishing him from Thebes.

Dionysus could be extraordinarily generous to those who worshipped and aided him. When the elderly satyr Silenus, who was like a father to Dionysus, went missing, only King Midas found him - hopelessly drunk by a lakeside.

In gratitude for finding this perpetually drunk, lazy satyr who could only move with his donkey's help, Midas asked Dionysus for a gift: the golden touch. Dionysus granted this wish, though warning Midas his greed would destroy him.

Later, Midas renounced this gift upon realizing it was a curse, and Dionysus helped him remove it.

Dionysus even brought his mother back to life, persuading Persephone and Hades, rulers of the underworld, to revive her - for he respected Semele for giving him life, and treasured her return. After resurrection, Semele became the earth goddess Thyone.

While wandering through the forest, you accidentally stumbled upon the mad revelry of chaotic Dionysus.

You saw satyrs, maenads and other followers of Dionysus drinking, dancing, engaging in orgies an
