this is going to piss off tame impala fans, right?
this thing has more synths than lead guitars, and that says something. I like it though, but ask other people and you'll get mixed opinions.
tame's psychedelic and colorful production is amazing on this album, but for me, i think all the songs bunched up together are both diverse and inconsistent in their own way. I can't really say anything bad about the production, it's just full of dreamy, creative, and aesthetic beats and melodies. I also love all of the effects and the little glitches scattered around the record that add to the stylistic approach on this.
And although this a great album, don't get me wrong, the vocals here are questionable. Although I'm praising all the effects found on this album, I wish he didn't use any on his voice, because his vocals are actually WASHED for a chunk of all the songs. It's not the worst thing ever, but it 100% got annoying for me as i listened through the entire album. A good example of weird vocals is on past life, which just feels like a filler to me.
For a general rule of thumb, I'd listen to the first half of it a lot more than the second half, maybe because the first half has songs that actually sound finished💀. But, the album does close with a strong song. This didn't feel like an underwhelming album at all, it's just that there's weak and overbearing vocals sprinkled around when you're past the halfway point on this record.
If anybody is pissed about why I gave this a 7/10, I think this album is comparable too DAMN by kendrick to why i chose this rating. In the end, they're both a flawed album, it has some really great highs but it absolutely has its lows. currents has great production but a bad voice, and DAMN has a great voice with bad production. A lot of people really only consider the good songs on the album and disregard all the misses. Yes, you can enjoy your DNAs, let it happens, HUMBLEs, less i know the betters, LOVEs, and new person same old mistakes, but you probably don't like past life, YAH, disciples, and GOD, do you?
This is a very influential album though, you'd be hardpressed to find a lot more indie music made after this to not be influenced by currents. This aged very well, but there's flaws in it, just like so many other albums by any other artist.
btw i don't listen a lot to this genre of music, so take this with a grain of salt (like literally any other review i make on here)
