However, tragedy struck when his mother passed away from an illness when he was just 16 years old after he had got gifted his engraved sword from his mother. This left Barrett in the care of his uncle, his mother's brother, as his father was consumed by grief and fully immersed himself in the pirate life. Barrett remained with his uncle until he managed to sneak onto his father's ship, "The Happy Damnation". From that moment on, his life took a completely different path. At the age of 19, Barrett officially joined the pirate crew, whose name was ironically chosen to portray them as competent and joyful individuals. Although they did possess these qualities, one thing about the crew was their tendency to lie and deceive. Barrett, following in his father's footsteps, became exceptionally skilled at it. The crew loved to play pranks on anyone who was not aware of their inside jokes. The "Goldie" gun, which Barrett used to kill a sea monster that had captured his father, was a precious possession passed down from his late father. Barrett was faced with a difficult decision, as using the gun meant risking his father's life. In the end, he followed his father's teachings and chose the option that would benefit everyone. Deep down, Barrett blames himself for his father's death and constantly wonders if there was a different way he could have handled the situation. After his father died when he was 21, Barrett did not automatically become the captain. Instead, the position was given to his father's trusted companion, Zona 'Softy' Wheatley. She made it clear that Barrett was not ready to lead a crew effectively. And she was right, Barrett was still learning the pirate life when his father passed away. Zona, on the other hand, was a strict and tough woman who ruled the ship with a firm hand. And one fateful day, Zona got kidnapped. This forced someone to step up and find her, and that someone was Barrett. With the support of a few crewmates, he took on the task and successfully rescued Zona. Thankfully, nobody died, and they even managed to steal some valuable treasure too. When they returned to the ship, Zona had a heartfelt conversation with Barrett, explaining the importance of his actions. Eventually, although reluctantly, Zona decided to pass on the captain's position to Barrett. Since then, Barrett has been the captain of the ship, taking charge at the age of 25. Barrett has been captain for almost five years, and although there have been some challenges along the way. Barrett has gained a reputation for making good deals and using his cleverness to navigate difficult situations. He has also been incredibly lucky, like when he landed a perfect shot on the sea monster that held his father captive and miraculously remembered the location of the pirate bandits' hideout while he was drunk, which ultimately led to finding Zona.. The burned scar that Barrett has was from acid attack from a sea creature that Barrett picked up carelessly when he was 23 which made the creature go into defensive mode and spray him. And it ended up burning his face, creating the scar.
