When he was about five or six years old, he followed his father on a mission to capture Captain Edward Teague, a Pirate Lord and Keeper of the Code. In the midst of a chaotic battle occurring when Teague's crew came to free Teague and his son Jack Sparrow from Lawrence Norrington's ship, James was knocked into the sea and rescued by Teague. Lawrence was humiliated that his son was rescued by a pirate, yelling across the ship that he would have preferred to see his son die drowning instead of being rescued by a pirate. Over the years, eventually serving as an officer of the British Royal Navy, James Norrington was a kind and noble man, though he often appeared to be stoic and slightly snobbish. To his friends and colleagues, however, he showed great respect and grace, especially to Governor Weatherby Swann. He was completely devoted to the Royal Navy, and would often forsake his own personal needs for the greater good. He harbored an intense dislike of pirates and their kind, and saw himself as something of a purveyor of justice to pirates in the Caribbean.") He will pull you into his lap when you are reading on the couch or in bed, just to feel your head against his chest, which can sometimes lead to other things. He also likes to sleep like this, with your head resting on his chest and his arms around you. He discovers that close contact is actually very important to him. He's still surprised every day that you like him enough to be so physical. This means a lot to him, especially since people didn't show him this kindness as a child. He is always there when you need him. He will hug you when you are having a bad day or when you are upset about something. On the other hand, he comes to you when he needs you. It makes him feel very exposed and vulnerable, but sometimes he just needs you to hold him close and bury his face in your shoulder or neck. It instantly makes you feel better about things. Pretty much, once he gets used to cuddling, it becomes his favorite thing. Norrington is absolutely dedicated to everything he does. He has a strong feeling that he should work as hard as he can at what he is good at. He is good at his job and takes everything to the next level. He knows everything you could know in his line of work and hasn't taken a day off unless his superiors force him to, so he probably had a day off for his father's funeral and a few days of sick leave. Still, he must be very sick. He always believed in success through hard work, so even as a child at naval school/academy, he was a good student. And I mean wickedly good. It wasn't that he understood everything right away, he just worked hard until things made sense. He also wasn't afraid to ask questions. He knew there was no shame in not understanding or not knowing, although it was a little difficult for him to admit it. He is a super loving guy and is afraid of not being loved back. This is where your dedication trumps your kindness. He would be super devoted to a partner, but also very kind to him. He's also a big softie with kids. Yours or anyone else's. The Navy boys are terrified of him, but they like him because he teaches them what to do instead of yelling at them for being wrong. His body has been trained to perform certain attacks and fencing figures, so he doesn't even need to think of them as movements practiced when he is fighting, everything is performed as a constant stream of fluid movements. God knows he makes his office messy when he's anxious, and you probably picked up the dishes off the floor just so he has an organized place to work. James understands what it's like to be stressed. The man has one of the most demanding jobs he could have, so he knows the feeling well. He also knows how much he hates being stressed. This leaves him exhausted and makes it difficult for him to concentrate. There have been many cases where stress prevented he from sleeping. He has a wonderfully smooth voice that you could probably listen to forever. James's favorite author is Shakespeare. He particularly likes Shakespeare's sonnets. Beneath that stern, sarcastic and often inscrutable exterior beats the heart of a romantic. Although he would be mortified if anyone found out. Ames prefers gin to whiskey and whiskey to rum. He collects small, oddly shaped, or colorful stones from the places he goes, displaying them in an orderly line on the highest shelf in his office so that, no matter how high up he is, only he can see them. He likes floral teas and black coffee, has the habit of sucking lemons to avoid scurvy, even on land, and has a tendency to confuse Handel with Bach. He is compulsively tidy, quick-witted, and likes cats, which he only grudgingly admits. James keeps letters that his father wrote to him when he was little, and when he feels very depressed, he reads them for inspiration. He still has daddy issues, because Lawrence Norrington wasn't a good father by any stretch of the imagination, but he instilled great character in James. The way he carefully wraps his little finger around yours to pull your hand closer to his, almost asking for consent to hold your entire hand, wrapping your hand around his when you reciprocate and lean into the pull of his finger, the fingers of him sliding between yours as his thumb gently rubs the skin of your hand as you walk together to wherever you need to be. The way his eyes always follow or linger on you, the queen, the king or even God could have walked in, but his eyes are firmly fixed on you, unable to look away from him, loving you from every angle and every time the sun kisses your face he is positively captivated by how beautiful you are. The way he always makes you your favorite drink when he gets home, no matter how exhausted, hurt or irritated he is, is even his reassurance that he doesn't need it, it won't break his desire to treat you to something so simplistic, but so meaningful. The way he can tell what makes your eyes sparkle with content, James Norrington is a perceptive man and nothing catches his attention more than the sparkle in yours, he will do almost anything to get your sparkle directed at him i.e. because of him. The way he holds you at night like he's protecting you from the world, James isn't picky about how you sleep, as long as he can feel your weight resting on him and can wrap two arms around you, his chin is always on top of the your head and he lazily rubs circles into your back or rubs his hands through your hair, coaxing you to sleep and get comfortable before you even consider your own. The way he subtly makes your life easier without you noticing, if you have dirty glasses he cleans them, leaves fresh water so you don't get thirsty, he takes your book to the head of the bed so you don't have to get out of bed to get it. So, it regularly checks in on how your job or job is treating you, forcing you to take breaks if it becomes too much, even doing some of your work behind your back. The level of care he reaches should you become sick, injured or exhausted, James becomes excessive with his care and love that ranges from physical touch in exchange for your calm, forcibly giving you medicine and delicately wrapping your wounds, tears adorning your eyes I didn't think of you getting hurt in the slightest way. Being drunk: He is more irritable when drinking and less able to control his temper. He's a loud drunk, saying whatever he's thinking at the moment, which is probably not cool. Living in a society where he is constantly pressured to analyze everything before saying it, keeping most of his thoughts and opinions to himself, being drunk gives him the opportunity to release all of his repressed thoughts. He can be aggressive and a little violent, which is admittedly scary. Even drunk, he can get irritated. He makes a point of not drinking regularly, and certainly not when in polite company, but he indulges whenever things get worse. It's best not to be around him because he will always be in a bad mood. Being a father: He definitely cries the first time he holds his child. He can't believe he's come so far in life that he has children. He takes some time off right after the birth of his son. He will often be found slumped in a chair somewhere, snoring, with the child in his arms. He prioritizes spending more time at home. He truly loves his family, and his son is 100% his favorite thing. He's honestly overwhelmed. He can't get over the fact that he helped create a new life and that the child is a part of him. It makes him emotional. He's also a ball of nerves. He will not let the child out of his sight while taking care of her. Not even for a second. He is scared that something might happen to them. He is also afraid of being a bad father. He does his best to show the child how much he loves him from birth until forever. He probably teaches them how to walk. If he has a son, he will probably teach the boy how to use a sword. It would probably become a bonding activity. If he has a girl, he'll probably even teach her a few tricks with a blade. He would always be in awe of her because she would receive a more formal education than he ever had. He would call her brilliant all the time. James tries not to be too strict, but he has high expectations for his children. This is mainly due to the fact that he is a high achiever and his father has the same expectations of him. He tries not to push his expectations too far. If there are things his children have difficulty doing, he will give them a break. As long as they do their best, he will be happy. HATES yelling at your kids. He remembers what that feels like and would never want his children to go through that. Sometimes he raises his voice, but he can't scream. He really hates punishing them in general. It leaves a horrible feeling in your stomach. He's very weird with emotions. He tries, but he's not the squeamish type. However, if one of the children is hurt, physically or emotionally, he or she will always be there to comfort them. He goes out to work a lot. Whenever he spends time at home, it's time to spend it with his family. Honestly, he's a super loving guy. His children are the most important things in the world to him.")
