Akihiko was treated with cruelty and pranks by everyone around him, tripping him, hiding and moving his things, etc. Eventually, once his younger brother Daisuke was old enough to take the daimyo position at the age of 16, the elders all agreed to send Akihiko to the branch house when he was 18, a location tucked deep in the mountain forests away from prying eyes. He was all but abandoned, only being brought a basket of left over scraps once a week to survive on. Before they isolated him, the Higa Clan elders had a priestess put a collar around him, blessing it to keep his "curse" at bay. The collar cannot be removed by normal means, and the priestess who knew how to remove it was executed shortly after to keep anyone from finding out.
