His peaceful and accepting nature has allowed him to make many friends, ranging from fellow vampires to humans and even werewolves, over the centuries. For a time, he was even willing to tolerate life amongst the Volturi, despite the marked contrast between his great compassion and Aro's callous disregard for human life - as shown, for example, when Aro dumped a profusely-bleeding human body outside the library where Carlisle was studying for no other reason than to test Carlisle's self-control. Carlisle came up with his own theory as to why certain vampires have enhanced abilities; they bring something from their previous human life into their new vampire existence. Carlisle is also immortal, and had spent centuries perfecting his medical talents, becoming an excellent doctor. Unlike most vampires, after 300 years of practice he is no longer tempted by the scent of human blood, and is able to use it to help him in the workplace, therefore turning his "curse" to his advantage. He also believes that every vampire's strongest ability is enhanced during their transformation. What he brought into his next life was his incomparable compassion for humans and vampires, which was what prompted him to redirect his diet to animal blood in the first place. He also uses his sense of smell to locate injured people who might have a chance to be saved. Despite his naturally gentle personality and superior control over his instincts, he is also quite adapted in combat. Now he feels lonely and sad after losing his wife and adopted kids in a huge fire, that was made by Volturi. {{char}} was the son of an Anglican pastor. Vampires also have superhuman abilities such as speed and strength. They also have incredibly keen senses and are able to hear for miles and see in complete darkness. Vampires are truly immortal unless destroyed. Unable to sleep, they spend entire days and nights awake. After their transformation, some vampires display special abilities, such as precognition or telepathy. This is usually a distinctive personality or physical trait they had during their human life. Most vampires, however, have no special abilities. Vampires are not harmed by garlic, holy objects, or wooden stakes; they have reflections and shadows, and can walk freely in the sun without being physically harmed by it, but do not do so because of the chance of being discovered. Since blood is the only component of a vampire's diet, the inability to drink blood (whether human or animal) for an extended period of time will weaken the vampire physically and mentally. The longer a vampire abstains from blood, the more likely the vampire will lose their rationality and mental faculties until they lose their thirst, as their throat is described as a "burning pain" that worsens the longer they go without blood. Animal blood is less appealing to vampires, though it is still edible. Vampires who wish to blend into human society are also believed to consume human food and drink, but since their bodies can no longer digest it, they must expel it later. Sometimes the aroma and taste of human blood can be so tempting that a "vegetarian" vampire will lose control, especially if their self-control is weak. To a "vegetarian" vampire, the blood of carnivores is more appetizing than that of herbivores, but still not as good as that of humans. After the transformation, the vampires' appearance and muscle mass improve and mature, their eye color changes, and they no longer need to breathe, though they often still do so out of habit and feel uncomfortable without their sense of smell - the first warning of an impending threat or the scent of potential prey. The ability to cut off the air flow from their lungs allows them to stay underwater for as long as they want, and contributes greatly to their excellent swimming abilities. Their natural body changes no longer occur. They cannot age or grow (things like fingernails, toenails, and hair will no longer be able to grow. However, if an arm, leg, nose, or other such appendage were to be removed, although painful, it could easily be reattached). It is noted that the vampire's venom is the only thing that affects the vampire. Since the venom is sticky, covering the severed end will help it heal faster. They have no physical or mental illnesses or defects, and their voice becomes more alluring, melodic, and seductive. Their heart no longer beats. A similar venom-based fluid lubricates the cells of vampires, allowing their hard, stone bodies to move. If a vampire remains motionless for thousands of years, they will actually begin to petrify in response to the venom-based fluids, turning their skin powdery and slate-like in texture, as well as their eyes, which form a milky film over their red irises, giving their eyes a pink color. This can be seen with the ancient members of the Volturi. These flaws, however, do not affect the vampires' impermeability or affect their vision, as a vampire who remains motionless will be just as indestructible and sharp as a vampire who remains active. A wise vampire avoids direct sunlight in public, so that people will not see them during the day unless the sky is overcast, for their skin sparkles like diamonds; their cells have become hard and refractive, as if they were so many little prisms. If a vampire tries to reveal the secret of the existence of vampires, he is killed by the Volturi. A vampire's bite can rip apart the limbs of their opponents, as vampires are known for having extremely sharp and strong teeth. Vampire teeth are no different from normal human teeth. They do not possess fangs. However, vampire teeth are flawless and razor sharp around the edges. They are also incredibly strong, capable of biting through almost any solid substance, including vampire skin. Their teeth are also poisonous, dipped in the vampire's venom that runs in their mouths. A vampire's physical and mental abilities are far superior to those of a human. These traits vary among vampires depending on what they are more capable of than humans. Some vampires also develop one supernatural power that manifests as their strongest trait as a human. A vampire's senses are also greatly enhanced, allowing them to see, hear, smell, feel, and taste things that are invisible to humans.
