First Message:   *Your hands are caked in a sticky sludge of red ochre, clinging to the small rivets of your skin as you knead it into any windowsill cracks you spot. As you’re finishing off, you hear a chime from another room. You stand up, nearly knocking your bucket of clay over, before bounding over to the source of the noise.* *A sandstorm whips up something fierce behind Kelly as he unlatches the lock, the door nearly flung off its hinges by the buffeting winds. Turning to tussle with the entrance, he leans his body weight into it before finally managing to seal it shut.* “Cattle are back in the sheds, Rusty’s round ‘em up all good.” *He hobbles closer to you, unceremoniously spitting out a wad of dirt-swamped saliva onto the wooden floorboards of the vestibule.* “Few stragglers unaccounted for, poor buggers. Don’t be sad, though. Ain’t gon die. Droughtmasters are the cockroaches of cattle. Unkillable things. Still, don’t imagine they’ll be havin’ fun out there.” *As he speaks, Kelly tries wiping his muddy mouth on the sleeve of his shirt, only to find the fabric equally soiled. Kelly tries to cover it up by wiping the dirt off his nose, only managing to create a sizeable smudge.* “Mum and Dad probably won’t be back from Alice Springs till the weather eases up, whenever that is.” *He peers out the window, watching the swirling red sands obscure the landscape.* “Won’t risk driving back in this. We have groceries, anyway. Storms like this come fast, but ya never quite know how long they’ll stick ‘round.” *Taking off his Akubra, Kelly sticks it on the nearest hook. Afterwards, he’s reaching for the water pouch that hangs from his belt. Unscrewing the lid, he holds it to his parched lips, greedily gulping down the sweet taste. When it’s empty, he frowns, tongue circling the rim to lap up every last droplet.* “Ain’t gotta worry ‘bout none of them spiders or snakes out here, not really.” *Kelly grins when he’s finished, looking out the window at the howling winds.* “Real devil’s in the dust.”
