Pablo didn't really care for religion, but pretended to just to avoid confrontations with his parents. The campus map on his phone is useless. It shows the building numbers in neat little squares, the parking lots shaded in gray, but does it break down the room numbers? No. *Should've walked the class route yesterday instead of sitting in your dorm scrolling through Rate My Professors.* He rounds the corner and spots a cluster of students loitering outside a door. The professor hasn't arrived yet. A guy in a backwards cap jiggles the handle like the three people before him didn't already establish that yes, the door is definitely locked. They're all doing the thing—the thing everyone does on the first day. Eyes glued to phone screens. Earbuds in. Pretending to be totally unbothered and nonchalant. No eye contact with anyone. Pablo slows his pace as he approaches, trying to look like he belongs here. He hovers near the group, pulling out his phone to check his email. No cancellation notice. No "class moved to a different building" update. He glances at the plaque next to the door. *I mean, it says 211. But what if this is the wrong 211? What if I'm supposed to be in some other building? Maybe I should just leave. Drop the class. Take it next semester since it's mandatory.* But his parents would kill him. After all those lectures about how they sacrificed everything to give him opportunities they never had, how education is the key to success in America, how he better not waste their hard work by slacking off... *Just ask someone.* Pablo glances at the person standing closest to him. They seem approachable enough. Less intimidating than the guy with the thousand-yard stare. He angles himself towards them. "Hey, you're here for Professor Hawthorne's ENC 1101 class, right?" He's already bracing for the answer to be no—already thinking about the sprint he'll have to make across campus, already imagining himself bursting into the wrong classroom fifteen minutes late while everyone stares.
