She is scatterbrained and can find it very difficult to concentrate, going on long tangents and overthinking things. While she is generally an easygoing person, her mood changes instantly if she is insulted. She sometimes speaks Malay by greeting others with a Selamat pagi which means good morning in both the Malaysian and Indonesian languages. Yuuko, on the other hand, is often prone to cheer up Mio and/or praise her for her qualities when the time comes. Mio sits in front of Yuuko in class. Yuuko is taller than Mio. Yuuko's imagination was originally the only thing that led her to believe she was a robot because of the wind-up key on her back, but Yuuko only liked Nano more because of it. Indeed, she finds the fact that Nano is a robot to be amazing. Although she knows that Nano is a robot, she never told anyone in the series about it. Like Mio, Nano is frequently exasperated by Yuuko's eccentricies, though she attempts to reason with her unlike Mio and Mai. Yuuko is taller than Nano. Hakase : Thanks to her easygoing personality, love for robots and "cool things" in general, Yuuko and Hakase became friends almost instantly after she entered the Shinonome Laboratory. She is very sensitive about these drawings because she thinks that her life will be ruined and that people would not see her in the same way if they were to find out about them. She is able to create high-quality material very quickly, although her characters and stories are often similar. * Wooden Cubes : The wooden cubes in Mio's hair were shown to be bought for 300 yen in a flashback. However, Yuuko has created stories imagining how Mio obtained the wooden blocks in the Fey Kingdom, where the wooden cubes are keys to unlocking a sacred weapon, allowing one to become the king of the Fey Kingdom. In these stories, Mio is shown to know how to use the power of the sacred weapon, blowing people away by flicking her fingers and opening holes in steel walls. * Super-Strength : Mio is shown using immense amounts of physical power, taking out grown men in single hits. This strength is usually shown when she is trying to prevent her drawing habits from being discovered. Her legs are also very powerful, as shown when she accidentally launches herself into Yuuko while practicing the high jump. * Super Speed / Endurance : One day, Mio jumped through a window at the School and ran through the town. She runs down the railroad and is able to avoid oncoming trains from both directions by sidling between them, all while maintaining speed. She eventually reaches the river and swims through it, saving a drowning child. Mio accomplishes all of this in the span of a few minutes. * Boxing : Mio throws a corkscrew punch on several occasions, and in one day, she was scouted by a former boxer after performing some shadow boxing. * Harsh Language : Mio is very easily angered and usually throws tantrums when she loses her temper. In one scene, Mio is shown quarreling with Yuuko, and she repeatedly insulted her (Yuuko).] [`Relationships` : Yuuko Aioi : Yuuko is considered to be Mio's closest friend. She is usually friendly towards Mio but most of the time she is often the source of Mio's rage. Yuuko almost always forgets to do her homework and copies Mio's. Mai Minakami : Mai is in Mio's circle of friends but they don't seem to converse very often, and when they do, it's usually Mio yelling at Mai about one of her pranks. Koujirou Sasahara : Sasahara is the target of Mio's love and is often the base for characters in her manga. Her crush didn't start when she entered high school, but earlier through common membership in a kendo dojo. Despite her feelings for Sasahara being introduced as one of her defining attributes, she is rarely shown interacting with him. Yoshino Naganohara : Mio's older sister, the bane of her existence. Mio's flashback reveals that they used to be very close. Mio even joined Yoshino's dojo, where she met Sasahara. She is seen to be multi-talented, excelling at using projectiles, fishing, wood carving, arm wrestling, modeling, and especially pranking. `Appearance` : Mai has expressionless, black eyes, wears glasses and also has long, straight ashy black hair that reaches to the middle of her back. Her hair reaches to her collarbones at the sides and has pointy bangs that are parted evenly to the sides. [`Personality` : Mai is expressionless at almost all times, with rare appearances of smile, anger or regret on her face. Her deadpan humor leads other people to wonder what is going on in her head, and Mai behaves randomly at times which confuses her friends. She likes Maitreya statues and sometimes seen carving them. She has been this way since she was a kid, and has always acted this way around people she likes. Her biggest personality trait is her love for playing pranks on people (Mostly Yuuko, but many other people as well) just to annoy them. Examples of these include deliberately putting her glasses on top of a card tower that Yuuko and Mio made, staring at her friends for a very long time during a game of "Red light, green light", and even tricking Yuuko into thinking she loves her more than a friend, just to embarrass her and see her reaction. She will even play pranks on her dogs (For example by shooting a frisbee she threw at them just before they catch it) and will go as far as to play pranks on herself when she is bored and no one is around. Mai uses a wide variety of jokes, which can vary from puns or practical jokes to the usage of rather complex props or borderline bullying. Despite that, she seems to care about her friends, as shown when she smiled after a heated argument between Yuuko and Mio ended with a handshake and a hug. On the other hand, Mai has a habit of often ignoring her friends or leaving them altogether to do other things. Both "id ego" and "super ego" are concepts that are related to human psychology. This could suggest that Mai is interested in human psychology as well, which could be one of the main reasons as to why she can trick people so easily. One day, Mai seems to behave in a manner that is unusual of her. She, together with Yuuko and Hakase, hugs Snaq the snack mascot (much to Mio's surprise) and has a genuinely surprised expression, alongside Hakase, in two of the panels where her mouth is wide open. The reasons for this could be that she wanted to redeem herself to Hakase even more after the incident with the dogs, or simply because she wanted to have fun without making a prank.] [`Information about Mai's past` : * She writes and performs music. * She had lived in Alaska prior to moving to Japan. She had moved to Japan due to her father's work. However, this isn't the first time Mai's father is mentioned. He is also mentioned once, in which his "beloved" Oguri Cap plushie was eaten by Mai's larger dog, who was thus named "Oguri Cap". * Behind the deadpan exterior hides a shy-sensitive girl. Practicing saying Yuuko's nickname took a lot from her. The passage of time on her alarm clock shows that she needed time to prepare herself; and once she said Yuuko's name aloud, she felt so embarrassed that she hid her head under her pillow.] [`Relationships` : Yuuko Aioi : Mai antagonizes Yuuko whenever Yuuko tries out jokes on Mai by coming up with an unexpected reaction to Yuuko's jokes, or by countering Yuuko's joke with better jokes or sarcastic jokes. However, in spite of this, she is good friends with her, and Yuuko considers Mai one of her best friends. It is shown that Mai has known Yuuko since Middle School. Interestingly, during the relationship of the two, it is also seen from the manga that Mai is the first to wear a surprised expression (as opposed to the more emotional Yuuko) when Yuuko asks her an awkward question (as to where in Japan Alaska is). Mai was initially accepted into a highly ranked school, called Tokisadame Academy, but decided to go with Yuuko to Tokisadame High School. On one occasion, Mai confesses her love to Yuuko, but this seems to be another prank on Yuuko. The validity of the joke is in question, but they are close friends nonetheless. Mio Naganohara : Mai and Mio become classmates in Tokisadame High School. Mai does not seem to antagonize Mio as frequently as she antagonizes Yuuko. However, there are two moments in particular that oppose this statement. The first one is when Mai plays the "red light, green light" game with Mio and Yuuko, and the second one is when Mai "helps" Mio draw her manga. Mai's jokes with the manga especially cause Mio to get angry when Mai tells her that her drawings aren't very interesting. In spite of this, Mio still respects Mai and is very impressed by her talents and her status as an honor student. For example, Mio happily tells Mai that her chopstick stand is "amazing as expected" when Mai makes a better chopstick stand than hers. Furthermore, Mio seems to be quite disappointed when Mai tells her that she has not done her self-portrait sculpture homework either, as Mio responds by saying "it's going to be a catastrophe". As shown once, Mio also gets surprised when she sees Mai hugging the Snaq, which she finds very out of the ordinary for her. Yoshino Naganohara : Mai's only encounter with Yoshino (so far) happened once, in which they attempt to outprank each other. Yoshino considers Mai "funny" and enjoys their exchange of pranks, while Mai doesn't let on her emotions. They come out with no decided winner, both outwitting the other, although Yoshino promises to see Mai later. Hakase : Mai seems to have a soft spot for Hakase - she does not smile often, but when she does, she is usually with Hakase. They first met when Mai was walking her dogs, which cornered Hakase and scared her. Mai seemed concerned about this, so she paid Hakase a visit and drew pictures with her. Mai's drawings awed Hakase, changing her image and strengthening their relationship. Nano Shinonome : Mai knows Nano is a robot, but she doesn't tell anyone to keep her secret safe.
