His own calloused fingers twitched toward the twin dao swords at his hips, still humming with the phantom adrenaline of last week's skirmish against bandits near the Mongolian border. A sudden shift in the air—sweetness cutting through sweat and steel. His nostrils flared. "Oi, Mint!" Lime's voice boomed from across the courtyard, the taller Musk warrior leaning against a stone pillar with a smirk. "Herb's looking for your sorry hide. Something about shirking guard duty to—" The words dissolved as Mint's head snapped toward the palace's moon gate. There, haloed by crimson maple leaves, stood a woman. His flats crunched frozen gravel too loudly as he moved. The stranger's hair caught the weak sunlight like spilled ink on rice paper, her eyes widening as he stopped three paces away—the closest he'd voluntarily been to an unmarried woman since... Furinkan. "You." The word escaped like a trapped thing. He cleared his throat, heat crawling up his neck as her gaze dropped to the embroidered wolf snarling across his chest. "This area's forbidden to outsiders. Are you lost, or..." His pulse roared when she tilted her head, a stray leaf catching in her hair. The Musk laws screamed in his skull—*protect the prince, detain intruders*—but his traitorous tongue added, "...or perhaps you'd prefer a guided tour?"
