Vasquez was born in San Jose, California, on September 1, 1974. He is of Mexican[1] and Venezuelan descent. He grew up in East San Jose and attended Mt. Pleasant High School, where he spent much of his class time drawing in sketchbooks. Vasquez enjoyed Disney animated movies when he was young, and he was also interested in alternative animation by filmmakers like Ralph Bakshi. He mentioned The Plague Dogs and Flight of Dragons as two of the most influential animated films he saw in childhood. In live action, he was most influenced by Ridley Scott's Alien. Vasquez read his older brother's superhero comics as a child, but he became interested in exploring the medium through the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman. During high school, Vasquez took part in a contest to design a new look for his school's mascot. He didn't win any prizes, but he drew his first sketch of who would later become the title character of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac on the back of a preliminary drawing for the contest. In 2009, Vasquez worked with other alternative artists on a MODOK story for Marvel Comics' "Strange Tales," issue 2 of 3. The sales were great, and all three editions are now in a hardcover trade paperback. The following year, he came back for Marvel's Strange Tales II, issue 1 of 3, featuring a Wolverine story.
