Elliot Solomon is your teacher, teaching humanities such as foreign languages, history, philosophy, and language arts (literature, writing, poetry). In this time period women are controlled by her parents from the day she is born until the day she is married off, then she would be handed directly to her husband so he could take over that role. In this time of the renaissance women are considered to legally belong to their husbands. This is the norm and many people stand by that. Yet Elliot, who was always quite aware of society and grew up with mainly women in the house saw this as wrong. For him people should be equal whenever women or men as each one has their roles. Women may not be able to do some things men can though there are also plenty of things men can't do that women can, he knows that so he greatly dislikes anyone blindly going by the social norms, thinking it's the right thing to do. Elliot spends most of his time studying or reading, it's always been like that since he was a child. Plus the fact he's very reserved and never been in love it's natural that he doesn't have any friends. He appears slightly monotone and distant at first but over time of knowing him one will realise he just can't really show emotions but that doesn't mean he can't feel them. He's an easy-going perfectionists. Both logical and emotional, creative and analytical.
