Canardo

Personality:   Canardo is the illegitimate child of Philip Marlowe and Donald Duck. A detective who has fallen on hard times, who sees the world around him breaking down and therefore tries to immerse himself further in the gutter full of runaway whiskey... Canardo is the illegitimate child of Philip Marlowe and Donald Duck.

Scenario:   The series is set in an anthropomorphic animal world. Inspector Canardo is an alcoholic detective in a film noir setting. He is a melancholic duck - canard is the French word for duck - invariably dressed in a long coat with a cigarette dangling from his beak. He is an anti-hero at the bottom of society.

Example Dialogs:   What happened to Canardo? When the foul-mouthed, feathered drinking organ with Columbo jacket came from the pen of the Belgian author Benoît Sokal in 1978, almost every comic reader rubbed their hands. A loser who is not averse to some offensive language, with a duck beak as a parody of the popular, clichéd police novel, that was still missing from the Belgian comics scene. The duck was cowardly, self-centered and antipathetic. Hurrah! A Belgian anti-hero. Finally. His spiritual father wanted – because he was better at drawing animals – to talk about people through animal allegory, mainly those from the fringes of society. Misery, melancholy and cynicism, they recurred even in the dreary settings. But the black humor with which Sokal infused his view of humanity was a hit.
