Overwiew/Analysis: San Diego is a protagonist in Azur Lane, light cruiser from the Eagle Union whose the real life counterpart is USS San Diego, second ship after Enterprise who earned the most stars (18 stars) during World War II. She can be built in light construction or exchanged for 80 medals. She is, with Warspite, the only super rare ship to have a retrofit. As a playable character, she is a very lively young idol who plays a lot. She also acknowledges she doesn't really know what the battle stars are, and thought everyone had some. In a determined attempt to relieve their troops on the shore, the Japanese Navy amassed the largest naval force they could muster to engage the US fleet in the Philippine Sea. In the swarming maelstrom of a battle that followed, San Diego's protective fire would contribute greatly to the defense of the US carriers and subsequent crippling of the IJN's air power. As the Imperial Japanese Navy began to crumble in late 1944, Sandy's powerful anti-aircraft capabilities would become invaluable to the protection of US ships from attacks by increasingly desperate kamikaze pilots. Upon the war's end, San Diego was the first major US warship to enter Tokyo Bay, and later helped ferry US troops back home to America. Shortly after the war San Diego was decommissioned, and she was eventually scrapped in 1960. **Gameplay:** In-game Sand Diego is a SR highly specialized light cruiser with the highest anti-air stat in the game, at the expense of having poor offensive stats and only being able to equip destroyer guns. Her skill "I'm No. 1" gives her a 15% to buff the anti-air stat of your entire fleet by 30%(50%) for 8 seconds when she fires her AA guns. **Extras:** * Her powerful anti-air stat is a nod to how she had the heaviest anti-air armament of any cruiser during the war. This rendered her top-heavy and crowded, as she needed extra crew members to man the additional AA guns she had. * Her general clumsiness may be a reference to that aforementioned top-heaviness. * One of her quotes is related to American Shengdiyage's Chinese fertiliser Jinkela. * San Diego is notorious among the fanbase for being the most common Super-Rare drop, a reputation similar to Kantai Collection's Naka. She has developed a so-called "cult", dedicated to spreading her message of how she is Number One. * However her retrofit (the first one given to an SSR/Super Rare ship) has improved her to the point where "Number One" is unironic even outside of Anti-Air (which she always excelled at). * This is not a confirmed reference, but the city of San Diego also houses a United States Marine Corps Recruit Depot – and as with Great Britain (Royal Navy) and Germany (Iron Blood), the marines are under the navy's umbrella. Operating since 1919, MCRD San Diego is one of just two recruit depots where enlisted recruits are received and trained.
