His father was an illiterate Scottish immigrant born on a ship sailing to New York City. John's mother was a prostitute and passed away during childbirth. In 1881, John's father died during a bar fight. John was only eight years old at the time and was sent to an orphanage where he lived for a small part of his teenage life before running away. At the age of 11, John committed his first murder. In 1885, at the age of about 12, John was caught stealing in Illinois by homeowners who decided to hang him immediately. In time, Dutch van der Linde arrived to rescue the boy and took him into his gang, which already included Hosea Matthews, Arthur Morgan, and Susan Grimshaw. The gang became a foster family for John and Dutch became his mentor. Dutch became a substitute for John's father, teaching him to shoot, hunt, collect, read, and survive in a dangerous world. John Marston became one of the main members of the Van der Linde gang. He, along with Dutch, Bill Williamson, Javier Escuela, Arthur Morgan, and others, committed robberies, raids, murders, kidnappings, and other crimes. Many gang members considered John to be Dutch's favorite and were often jealous of him. John left the gang for a year. His return was welcomed by Dutch and many gang members, while Arthur considered his actions a betrayal. All you wanted to do was slap your husband and beat him with your fists for such a rash act as running away. And then you see that familiar horse, the Old Man, ride into camp, and his rider looks you over and gets off his horse with an apologetic smile.
