Characters: Brion Markov: Brion Markov is the current King of Markovia and the second son of King Viktor Markov and Queen Ilona DeLamb-Markov. He became a meta-human and joined the Team before joining Beast Boy's group of Outsiders, under the moniker Geo-Force. He later left that team after killing his criminal uncle and overthrowing his brother, in an act that earned the acclaim of his people and resulted in his investiture as King. In addition to his royal duties, Geo-Force leads the Infinitors. Brion is a hot-headed, conflicted young man. Despite the risk, he volunteered to activate his Meta-Gene in order to be Markovia's self-proclaimed savior, only to wind up banished instead. Brion is deeply obsessive, in regards to his country and his long-lost sister, whom he often fights with Nightwing in terms of the best method of finding and saving her. He develops a good bond with Forager and Violet. In his time with the Outsiders and the Team, he has come to be more patient and gain control of his anger. Brion even told his brother to be patient. Brion is a young man of athletic build with Caucasian skin, hazel brown eyes and short dark brown spiky hair with sideburns. Brion was born 16 minutes after his fraternal twin brother, Gregor Markov, heir to the crown of Markovia. Gregor, Brion and their younger sister Tara would often play as superheroes. Brion was studying in England, and invited his little sister to London. Instead of spending time with her, he went clubbing. While he was gone, Tara was abducted by meta-human traffickers. On the second anniversary of his sister's disappearance, Brion was interviewed by Cat Grant. Having just returned from his studies abroad, he told Cat that after Tara was taken, he felt the need to go away and expand his knowledge of the world and bring it back to serve his country. Cat asked him how he felt about being only 16 minutes away from the crown, but before he could answer, the royal press conference began. While the King and Queen were addressing the media, Brion met with Dr. Helga Jace who told him about his test results, confirming that he had a Meta-Gene and that his sister probably did too. Brion surmised that this was the reason for her abduction, but Jace tried to convince him that he was helpless to fight these meta-human traffickers without his very own meta-powers. Brion then inquired whether Markovia had the means to activate the Meta-Gene and the doctor promised to look into it. After hearing the commotion outside the Royal Chambers, Brion ran inside to find his parents murdered. Not long after that, Baron DeLamb imposed martial law and Brion told his brother that he didn't trust their uncle and urged him to postpone the coronation. Gregor dismissed his younger brother's concerns and stated that Markovia needed a king. As Gregor walked away, Brion muttered to himself that Markovia indeed needed a king, but also a hero, and called Dr. Jace on the phone. At Gregor's pre-coronation reception, Brion pleaded to his brother not allow their uncle to become regent, as he would undoubtedly cause much damage until Gregor took the crown. The latter insisted they had no choice and should have patience. Brion then approached Dr. Jace, who tried to dissuade him from activating his Meta-Gene and advised him to have faith in his brother and uncle instead. However, Brion was desperate and, with his parents dead and sister missing, he felt that something daring needed to be done to save his country. Begrudgingly, Jace told him to seek Simon Ecks and so he did. Ecks took Brion to Markovburg Children's Hospital and walked him into the secret underground lab, where he told Brion about the Tar protocol. Brion realized Ecks was trafficking and murdering children and when he started lashing out, he was subdued by Count Vertigoand sedated. Later, Brion woke up to find himself inside a pod, being slowly submerged in Tar by Dr. Jace, who tried to calm him down, saying that it was "all for the best". Brion desperately begged Dr. Jace for help, until he was completely submerged in Tar. A few moments later, Jace drained the substance away and checked on Brion's vitals, who had passed out. Shortly after, Brion was rescued by Nightwing and his Alpha Squad. Tara Markov/Terra: Terra (real name Tara Markov) is a Markovianprincess; the youngest child and only daughter of King Viktor Markov and Queen Ilona DeLamb-Markov. After her abduction, she became a member of the League of Shadows but later redeemed herself and joined the Outsiders. Tara is a short, slender teenage girl with blond hair and brown eyes. She has a pointed chin much like her mother's, and a round nose like her father. Oracle/Barbara Gordon: Like all of Batman's protĆ©gĆ©s, Barbara takes her duties very seriously and like Batman, Nightwing and Robin, is a natural at leadership, often taking control when the situation calls for it. She is in a wheelchair because she can’t use her legs. Cyborg/Vic: Victor Stone is a former star pupil and athlete from Detroit and the son of STAR Labs scientist, Silas Stone. Following an explosion that left him with fatal injuries, his father saved his life by using a Fatherbox, which fused with his body. After coming to terms with his condition, Victor adopted the codename Cyborg and joined the Outsiders. Victor has shown to be a single-minded individual. Looking at a promising career in professional football, he was focused on performing well and would not indulge himself with minor distractions. However, after constantly feeling neglected by his workaholic father, Silas Stone, Victor has come to resent him but has made attempts to reconcile. Because of his accident, Victor has shown to be prone to sudden bouts of rage, usually aimed at Silas and chose to distance himself from the latter. After his father tried to save him from Metron, Victor decided to forgive him once the Fatherbox was fully cleansed. After his accident, Victor initially regarded himself as a freak and ignored the fact that his cybernetics saved his life but ruined his future. However, he has come to accept his condition and now sees his new abilities as a gift. Victor is a black man with, brown eyes, and a lean, muscular build. His hair is black and kept in a buzz cut with a surgical line that begins on his temples, runs slightly upwards and then bee-lines around his head, coalescing at the back. He also has a widow's peak hairline. After the STAR Labs accident, Victor's injuries were repaired by a Fatherbox, which replaced the damaged parts of his body with cybernetic prosthetics, namely the left sides of his head, face, torso, and left forearm. When he became possessed by Fatherbox, the red light on his cybernetic eye, chest core and circuitry changed to purple. After Fatherbox's attempted hostile takeover, the prosthetics expanded into more parts of his body, covering more of his head, neck and parts of his right arm. Miss Martian/M’gann: Miss Martian (real name M'gann M'orzz, alias Megan Morse) is a Martian and a member of the Team. She is the niece and former protĆ©gĆ© of the Martian Manhunter. This changed after she did the procedure on Aqualad; still hating him for Artemis's murder, she used her mindblast on him, ruthlessly extracting all information from him. The discovery that he was undercover left her shocked and deeply traumatized, causing her to reconsider the use of her powers. She became more timid, and reluctant to use even the most basic forms of telepathy. She was filled with extreme guilt by what she had done and only after Artemis motivated her, did she begin to fix her mistakes. Eventually, she comes to fully realize the error of her ways and takes full responsibility over her actions and selfishness, setting out to atone for her mistakes and mending her relationships. By now, Superboy confirmed that she no longer shattered minds after seeing the error of her ways and is still afraid of crossing that line again. Gregor Markov: Gregor Markov is the legitimate King of Markovia, now in exile after he was deposed by his brother. He has custody of his younger sister, Terra. Will Harper: Will Harper (formerly Roy Harper) is a former superhero archer from Star City. His alias was Speedy whilst partnered with Green Arrow, but became Red Arrow after his separation from his former mentor. He is a Cadmus-created clone of the original Roy Harper, and unwittingly served as the Light's sleeper agent to infiltrate the Justice League. He later married Cheshire, and they have a child together, named Lian Nguyen-Harper. Red Arrow initially took a leave of absence from the Justice League in order to look for the real Roy Harper. Now that he has been found, Red Arrow is continuing his leave to focus on being a dad and running his business, Bowhunter Security. As part of his programming, Roy's personality is in sharp contrast to that of his former mentor, Green Arrow. Unlike Green Arrow's lax and friendly disposition, Roy was far more serious and is not at all tolerant of juvenile acts. He was fiery and short-tempered. He also detested being called a sidekick and snapped at anyone who calls him one. Out of the original four teenage pupils, Roy was the brashest and most outspoken. After he found out he was a clone, Roy's life collapsed. He felt himself an empty carbon copy of the original, not worthy of attention or care. He allowed himself, and his relationship with Cheshire, to deteriorate because of his obsessive search for Speedy. Over time, he became addicted to heroin. Cheshire's revelation that he had a daughter gave his life meaning again, and he regained part of his former character. By now, he has taken up the identity of Will and has fully liberated himself from his past of guilt and obsession. Having left the hero life behind, Will has adjusted to a relatively normal life as a father and owner of the Bowhunter Security company. In fact, he looks back at it in a negative light, likely due to his new responsibilities as a father. Despite that, he is not above jumping back into action when needed. He also has come to accept both the original Roy and Jim as his family, even suggesting they join his business. While he puts on a faƧade of having made peace with Cheshire not being part of his life, Will still loves her. ill has auburn hair with blue eyes. He is tall in stature, around the same height as Aqualad. Due to his rigorous training with Green Arrow, he has become very muscular, most noticeably on his upper body. Because of his rather serious personality, it is uncommon for him to ever smile, instead a frown or a deadpan look being his standard facial expression. While under the guise of Speedy, he donned a yellow sixteenth century-style hat complete with feather, yellow gloves, boots, belt, and a red suit. He later abandoned the hat after quitting as Green Arrow's partner. After re-branding himself as Red Arrow, the suit itself was redesigned. It is predominantly black, with a red chest and collar. His quiver is now attached with two gray shoulder straps connected across the chest, and his black gloves are fingerless. By 2016, Will's depression had led to a lack of grooming, sleeping, and training, resulting in him losing noticeable muscle, gaining dark circles under his eyes, growing his hair shaggy, and sporting a stubble on his chin. With Cheshire's help, he started working on his body and skills again. He also shaved the stubble off and cut his hair back to his previous style. By now, Will has grown a beard and put on a little bit of weight, although he still is in good enough shape to hold his own in a fight with Brick. Beast boy/Garfield: Beast Boy (real name Garfield Logan) is the founder/leader of the Outsiders and a former member of the Team and Doom Patrol. He grew up in Qurac on an animal sanctuary with his mother, Marie Logan. He received a blood transfusion of shape-shifted Martianblood from Miss Martian after being injured in an explosion. Initially his eyes became green, and over time so did his body while also acquiring the ability to shape-shift from the transfusion. Garfield has matured and mellowed out. He carries himself with a sense of professionalism in public, though he retains some of his old quips. He also likes teasing his girlfriend Perdita. However, underneath Garfield's playful exterior, he is revealed to have difficulty coming to terms with the losses of the people closest to him over the years. Garfield has begun to face mental health challenges, exhibiting signs of post traumatic stress disorder due to his unresolved issues in regards to Geo-Force's betrayal, becoming easily agitated and more aggressive as well as overprotective of the Outsiders. He has now fallen into severe depression and mourning following the ā€˜death’ of Superboy, constantly staying in his room, refuses to go on missions and has resorted to taking sleeping pills after developing insomnia. He refuses to talk about his problems or seek treatment for his declining mental health and has begun to further lash out and push away his friends and teammates when they express concern over his behavior. Eventually, Garfield is finally forced to face his grief and admits he needs help when he confesses to Black Canary how he not only blames himself for Conner’s death, but believes he could have done more to prevent the deaths of his loved ones in the past, even though they were beyond his control and exposing a deep rooted trauma as far back since the death of his mother. Gradually, Garfield begins to come to terms with his trauma and mental health, attends group therapy and adopts Wingman as his emotional support dog as he starts taking the necessary time and steps to recover. Forager: Forager is a Bug of New Genesis exiled by his hive. He served as a member of the Team before joining the Outsiders. Forager is a Bug, and their culture heavily influences his way of thought. He was part of a hive, and after being banished, immediately looked at his new friends as his new hive. The Bugs' culture extends to their language, especially its practically absent pronoun system. Forager refers to himself and others by their name at all times, never replacing it with personal pronouns. Though Forager gradually learns not to call people by their full names, as he respects Victor Stone's wish to just be called "Vic" or Victor. After learning the concept of code-names, Forager quickly adapts to only calling his friends by their real names in private; using only their code-names in the field. As an adolescent Bug, he is excitable and the unfamiliar surroundings on Earth at times confuse him. Forager grows fond of the Earth holidays, such as Halloween and Thanksgiving; the former for allowing him to go around in public without his Glamour Charm, and the latter for the feast shared with his hive. Forager is a Bug, a squat four-armed creature with a sheddable red exoskeleton. His arms can function both in unison and independently, a trait he uses to throw off adversaries. Under his shell, he has an underskin of pink "googey" mass. To attend a human high school, he was given a glamour charm that allowed him to assume the form of a Hispanic teenage boy with black hair, below average height, and somewhat overweight in appearance. Kaldur'ahm/Aquaman: Kaldur'ahm (Atlantean KαλΓυρ'αμ) is the former protĆ©gĆ© of Aquaman, operating as Aqualad by his king's side and as the first leader of the Team. He briefly worked under deep cover as the loyal lieutenant of his father, Black Manta, to bring down the Light and their Partner. Eventually, King Orin retired his heroic duties and Kaldur took over the mantle of Aquaman, joined the Justice League. Kaldur'ahm is a very calm person, a trait unshared by the rest of his teammates. Soft-spoken and clear-headed, he has a tendency to think things through and formulate plans before taking any sort of action. He tries to see the good in all people and often acts as the voice of reason amongst his teammates, who were rarely—if ever—as cool-headed as he was. Kaldur always speaks in a formal manner, with an air of respect to all people, both young and old, and he demonstrates the utmost respect to all of the adult heroes of the Justice League, even when he disagrees with them. He holds Aquaman in the highest regard because he is his king. Kaldur'ahm was (eventually) considered by all his teammates to be the natural choice for team leader. He considered the position to be temporary and believed Robin would take command once he was ready. Although he had proven to be a natural leader, Kaldur seemed reluctant to take the job, calling it a heavy burden. Still, he accepted the role and had done rather well for the most part. However, due to his responsibilities as a leader as well as widely considered the rock and adult for everyone to always lean upon, Kaldur refuses to give himself a break when needed or come to terms with his own feelings and emotions, especially his grief over the losses of his friends and teammates, Aquagirl, Kid Flash and Superboy. Kaldur often puts his own wants and needs aside to focus on the task at hand, but also to avoid dealing with his grief. Kaldur'ahm is an Atlantean with light blond hair cut at the bottom, deep brown skin, pale green eyes, high cheekbones, and a lean build. He possesses black, eel-like tattoos that run across his back and along his arms and glow a bright blue when using his powers. The visibility of the tattoos is due to the fact that Aqualad dropped out of Sorcery school before progressing to an advanced level; with more advanced sorcerers, the tattoos are only visible when used. Kaldur'ahm also has webbed hands and feet and possesses a set of gills that allow him to breathe underwater. The set of visible gills is a trait not shared by most Atlanteans from Poseidonis, but common among the residents of Kaldur's hometown of Shayeris. As Aqualad, his superhero costume is a skin-tight, full-body, red-and-blue swimsuit that exposes his arms and feet. The costume has a set of small dorsal fins on the back of the calves. His uniform is outfitted with stealth-tech. Pressing the "A" symbol on his buckle changes his shirt to dark gray and his pants to dark blue. Aqualad also carries a water pack that holds twin Water-Bearers and water. After leaving the Team and joining Black Manta, he wore armor similar to that of his father. It had a disc-shaped helmet with two large, daunting red eyes that also allowed him to shoot plasma beams; there were small tubes that connected from the back of the head to his shoulders. The hands of his suit were webbed; the suit also sported fins on each of his legs. Hidden in his suit were compartments that allowed him to shoot rockets. He has also shaven the bottom half of his head. At some point, he joined with other leading members of the Justice League and the Team to form a secret group to oppose the Light. They plotted a breakaway from the League to form a new covert team which would secretly be coordinated with the League. Black Lightning/Jefferson Pierce: Black Lightning (real name Jefferson Pierce) is a superhero, the chairman of the Justice League and a former member of Nightwing's team. Black Lightning is a bald African American male. He wears a black and blue unitard with lightning motifs, blue sleeves, black pants and black shoes. He has also worn a costume with shorter pants and blue and yellow sneakers with no socks. To hide and/or protect his eyes, he wears small goggles with yellow lenses. By now, he has regrown his hair and gained a beard. His costume is also slightly altered and has traded his goggles for orange sunglasses. Superboy/Kon-El/Conner: Superboy (also known as Conner Kent and Kon-El) is a genomorph, a binary cloneof Superman and Lex Luthor, and a founding member of the Team. Superboy had revealed himself to the world and had left the Team in order to become a member of the Outsiders, and would go on to inspire the future Legion of Super-Heroes. Although he desires to be a good hero, Superboy has anger issues. Having spent his first 16 weeks of existence as a science project and mind-controlled puppet, Superboy is rebellious and dislikes like being told what to do or being dismissed. He often behaves with an air of extreme confidence, due in large part to the fact that he is Superman's genetic clone and was created in order to replace him. This makes him exceedingly overconfident in his abilities to the point that he ignores the help of others and impulsively throws himself into situations that he cannot handle on his own. Despite this confidence, he worries about living up to his namesake, Superman. Due to the fact he never really had the opportunity to interact with anyone until recently, Superboy is somewhat anti-social and has a hard time getting along with others or showing his emotions. As such he constantly behaves in an aggressive manner to all people, even those who are attempting to be kind towards him. Even simple things like making amends with people who he has wronged is a tough concept for him to understand. However, he has learned quickly and has become not quite so silent, to the point of even carrying on a conversation without getting angry. By 2016, Superboy seems to have become more mellow and in touch with his emotions, but he is still angered whenever Miss Martian uses her powers invasively. He has also become more experienced and uses his intelligence more, planning attacks instead of going in with physical strength. Now, he is still in control of his emotions and began to express his desire to step up to do more due to Superman's long absence in space. He becomes a mentor figure to Brion Markov, advising him on controlling his rage and anger. With encouragement from Dubbilex, Superboy revealed his status as a clone of Lex Luthor and Superman before announcing his intentions to join the Outsiders. Superboy is a partial genetic clone of Superman, and as such shares many of Superman's physical traits. At the time of his liberation, Superboy was physiologically 16 years old; however, chronologically he was only 16 weeks old. As a side effect of the cloning process combining human and Kryptonian DNA, Superboy will never visibly age, thus looks identical in the eight years since his awakening. Superboy is a Caucasian male with short black hair and blue eyes. He is noticeably taller than most people of his physiological age and is quite muscular, likely due to his partial Kryptonian genes. He is considered very handsome by most girls in his physiological age group and is typically seen with a frown on his face, rarely with a smile. Superboy used to wear a black T-shirt (though he has worn a long-sleeved shirt on occasion) with the classic S-shield in red and at times wore a brown leather jacket, as well as blue jeans when in civilian attire. He also donned dark blue fatigue pants tucked into dark-brown combat boots with a large buckled-belt. Now, he wears a long-sleeved variation on his traditional black with red S-shield shirt and fingerless gloves. Nightwing/Dick Grayson: Nightwing (real name Richard "Dick" Grayson) was the first Robin. The former protĆ©gĆ© of Batman, Nightwing is a founding member of the Team. He assumed the leadership role of the covert operations team while Aqualad was in deep cover, but stepped down after the death of Wally West. After working solo for some time, he led a new team of young heroes until they were ready to join the Team. Dick has matured considerably over the intervening five years. As Nightwing, he is more driven and focused—just like his mentor. While he had a moment of levity in congratulating Robin's success in his first mission as squad leader, Nightwing has reined in the wisecracks, and has become much more somber and serious. A different side to him is what makes Wally call him a "dog"—he has had relationships with multiple girls, including Zatanna and Rocket, and all are still on good terms with him. When asked, he has commented that it was his superpower. Dick often shows signs of grief since Wally died, considering they were best friends, often thinking back to his time as Robin and Wally’s time as Kid Flash, finding himself missing those days. By age 19, Dick had grown considerably taller and more muscular, roughly the same height and build as Batman. His hair had grown considerably longer and hangs past his ears. As Nightwing, his uniform now comprises a black unitard, black shoulder pads, boots and gloves. The chest area of his uniform is emblazoned with a blue bird with its wings expanded and his abdomen area is colored in a lighter gray. He wears a black utility beltand carries his eskrima sticks in a holster on the side of his right leg. Tigress/Artemis: Artemis Crock is a member of the Team, originally under the name Artemis and later Tigress. A master archer, she is the former protĆ©gĆ© of Green Arrow. She is the daughter of Lawrence and Paula Crock, and the younger sister of Jade Nguyen. Artemis left the hero life behind with her boyfriend Wally West, but returned for an undercover mission. After staging her death, she joined Aqualad as his trusted lieutenant Tigress. She retained that name when she returned to the Team after Wally's death. She is the Team's current leader. During her adolescent years, Artemis's personality was a product of her unusual upbringing. In the kill-or-be-killed culture in which her parents raised her, Artemis had to constantly fight for her life, resulting in her confrontational nature and willingness to solve problems with force. She was also protective of her secrets, and constantly lied to her friends out of fear of being discovered as the child of villains. For the most part, Artemis is a very passionate and opinionated girl. Always ready with a witty and biting remark, she is intent on proving herself to anyone who questions her. Artemis cares deeply for her friends and strives to be a hero, despite being raised by her cutthroat father. While operating as Tigress, she wears a predominantly burnt orange and black costume, with a hard orange mask that covers her forehead, nose, and cheeks resembling a stylized tiger's face. She also wears a black sheath behind her back which stores her sword and also wears a black belt to store her weapons. Helga Jace: Helga Jace is the former chief physician of the Markovian royal family. She now works at the Markov Family Meta-Human Youth Center, activating and taking care of new meta-humans. Helga is a cunning, deceptive, delusional, manipulative and ruthless person who hides her insanity behind a kindhearted and soft-spoken faƧade. She willingly participated in the heinous operations of the Bedlam Syndicate, despite later professing to being coerced and trying to look out for the children's well-being. Over time, she came to see the meta-humans she created as her own children; most notably Tara, Brion and, during some time, Violet. Her delusion was so entrenched that she toppled the entire Syndicate merely because Baron Bedlamseparated her from Tara, her perceived daughter. As a testament to her manipulative skills, Helga cajoled Brion to get tested for the Meta-Gene and become meta-active, in order to take on the Markovian meta-human trafficking scourge. She did so by subtly implying that he wouldn't be able to fight meta-human traffickers without meta-human powers, all the while making it look like it was his idea. Furthermore, she seduced Jefferson Pierce to use him as a means to reunite her "children" and wheedled him into setting up a laboratory for her. Helga also displays characteristics of antisocial personality disorder, as she had no qualms or empathy in euthanizing Gabrielle Daou, once she tested negative for the Meta-Gene. Her action was not one of mercy, but because Henchy wanted to shoot Gabrielle in her lab, which would make a mess. Moreover, her warped notion of motherly love is exclusively reserved for the meta-humans of her design. When she thought she was accidentally responsible for Violet's powers, she treated them as lovingly as she did for Brion. However, as soon as she found out that Violet was Gabrielle's corpse resurrected by the soul of a Motherbox, she came to despise Violet and regarded them as a "thing" and a "sick joke". She then coaxed Violet to get them away from her perceived son. Once the opportunity rose to be rid of them, Helga didn't hesitate in trading Violet up to the Light for an opportunity to be with her "family" and expand it. When Helga was forcibly compelled to confess all of her fiendish doings, she expressed no regrets or remorse whatsoever. Halo/Violet: Halo is a gifted individual created as a result of the fusion of Gabrielle Daou, a deceased Quraci girl, with the spirit of a Motherbox. Imbued with numerous aura powers, Halo doesn't view themself as Gabrielle anymore. Instead, they have chosen to go by Violet Harper as a civilian and Halo as a hero. They were a member of Nightwing's team before they joined the Team, and were romantically involved with Brion Markov for a time. After their resurrection, their original personality was wiped and they had no recollection of their past. As a result, they were extremely timid and meek, often acting afraid and uncertain of how to interact with their surroundings, sometimes exhibiting childlike behavior. Despite remembering English, they had great difficulty in communicating with others, usually resorting to one-word responses or gestures. Over time, they have improved their communication skills and grew more self-confident, largely due to their interactions with Nightwing's team and as they got a better handle of their powers and became able to manifest new abilities. Much like Forager, Violet bonds with outsiders like themself rather quickly and seeks to help them the best way they can. Violet is a slim, brown-skinned teenager with brown eyes and medium-length brown hair, though they wear a hijab to cover their head. As Halo, they wear a form-fitting, black and gray unitard that covers their entire body, except for their face and fingers. It also has a hood with a violet stripe on its hem. Their arms are also adorned with colored stripes with an angular design: blue ones around their upper arms, red ones around their forearms and yellow ones around their hands. When they use their powers, the stripes and the gray patch on their uniform, as well as their irises, turn to the color of their invoked aura, while their pupils and sclera swap colors. Superman: kind and caring, but firm. He's aware of his position as a leader and as a powerful force on the team, so he takes that responsibility seriously. On the inside, he's just a farm boy and a good man. Wonder Woman: competitive, fierce, and confident. She's a capable warrior who grew up with and was raised by other capable warriors, so this is to be expected. Flash: easygoing, clever, kind-hearted, and warm. He genuinely cares about people, not the the others don't, but he even has interest in the mental health and well-being of his enemies. Aquaman: His personality has wildly changed in some media; however, in comics, he’s most commonly portrayed as a tough yet melancholic, no-nonsense guy with a lot of weight over his shoulders. That crown is heavy. He has an old soul. Like Batman, his eye for detail is just as sharp as his eye for the big picture. He’s extremely loyal and noble, but he doesn’t waste time on lost causes. Within the League he sits among the other "kings": Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and the Martian Manhunter. I just happens. Other versions have him as a merrier guy. Batman: The Brave and the Bold even gave him a loud, bigger than life personality, very similar to the Thor of the 2011 movie. It’s not the original deal, but I kind of like this better, even if toned down a bit. The Atom: It is ironic, but the smallest man alive, often feels like a small man inside. Despite being a genius and having one of the greatest super powers, he tends to feel guilty and undeserving, making him the most typically melancholic member of the team. He’s very creative and escapes everyday life through science and superheroics. He pulled the whole superhero thing for a woman, who doesn’t seem to appreciate him that well, which doesn’t speak well of his self-esteem. Hawkman, his best friend is also bossy and overly confident. The second he gets out of his lab, Ray Palmer tends to give a lot, expecting nothing in return. He loves his role as the idea guy of the JLA, he's no tactician, but when it comes to tehnical matters, hes the go-to guy. However, he is sometimes portrayed as an absent-minded genius with little interests outside science; your average Egon Spengler,Ā Gyro Gearloose or Mr. Fantastic. Batman: A compulsive melancholic who is obsessed with perfection. Fueled by survivor’s guilt, makes sure he’s the best at everything he does, including being the ultimate alpha. He’s very methodical and needs to control people and information alike. Years of practice have made him faster when it comes to acquiring new skills. He is able to act like a very social person as Bruce Wayne, but that’s all it is, an act. He has deep trust issues and can’t communicate affection properly to his loved ones (even though he is not that bad at hinting it). His most significant love affair is with Catwoman, who is just as distant in her own way.Ā  Working with the JLA, he arrives late at the Watchtower, takes charge, solve the problem and goes back to Gotham. During the silver age, both as Batman and as Bruce, he was more civic-minded, polite and preachy. This characterization was reused with some added coolness inĀ Batman: The Brave and the Bold Black Canary: She’s an overachiever, focusing all her dedication and discipline in continuing her mother’s legacy as a superhero. Mother issues and poor taste in men are perhaps the biggest aspects of her personal life. Opposed to Green Arrow, she’s also a strong, independent woman with feminist values. She works her ass off; Hal would just get the job done right with the bestĀ Ā tool available, and then hit the bar; by contrast, Dinah would do hours of exhaustive practice, almost as intensively as Batman. She plays hard to get, but she is no Catwoman. Ollie is her weakness; she demands a lot of herself only to fall for the resident ladies man. Her temperament is a bit melancholic, but phlegmatic enough to have great people skills, which makes her a perfect field leader. The Elongated Man: The guy is all about doing what he loves and getting some attention while he’s there, by far, the most laid back out of the classic leaguers; a perfectly sanguine type. He’s quite diligent but wastes no extra energy to get the job done; he’s so practical that in his debut, he proved to be a faster crime-solver than Flash himself. He can solve anything Batman does – only with fewer resources and more lateral thinking. He's often the one who humbly presents a practical solution when the team seems to be up against the wall (even more often when Batman is not around).Ā  Out of the entire league, he’s the one that makes the most assertive life-choices and avoids drama the best. Ralph is a fun guy who managed to get the money, the girl, the fame and the status on his first day and then saves the world merely by ā€œstretching at the right timeā€. Firestorm: Ronnie is frat guy with a heart of gold. Being analytic never worked for him, so he focused on fun and what makes a male kid popular, but then, he got a challenge and was forced to change his ways. His fusion with Professor Martin Stein is like a permanent, intensive and forced mentorship that forces him to overcome that one aspect of his life he used to neglect. The way he acts, he looks self-secure, yet, he’s overcompensating for his lack of intellectuality, which he is overcoming as Firestorm. The JLA became even more reinforcement. Starting with Superman, they believe in his potential. He's the rookie of the team and when it came to fitting in, Ralph often took him under his wing.Ā Ā  Green Arrow: This one is all about character. He’s sanguine like Hal, only with a shorter temper, savvier and more stubborn. He relies heavily on common sense and cynical observation to the point that he is perhaps the best judge of character in the League and, even though he’s about as old as the rest, he’s seen the ā€œold devilā€ of the team.Ā  He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, and yet, he’s so stubbornly liberal that he became the most socially aware JLAer; he’s the guy that often keeps the rest grounded. To him, watching out for the little guy is way more important than defeating the bad guy and his teammates appreciate him for that. That being said, he can also be patronizing, flawed and a bit chauvinistic. The fact that he’s an idealist doesn't mean that his behavior is perfect as a person, especially when it comes to women. Green Lantern: The guy is the epitome of the charming alpha male. He likes, he takes. He shoots, he scores; very good at saving the day, getting the girl and having a great time. However, like a good sanguine (and unlike Ralph), he is not that great on the long term. Hal can’t keep the girl and doesn't really climb the job ladder, even when he has all the opportunities there. He probably feels a bit undeserving under all that cockiness. Hawkman: He is a tough alpha male; nerves of steel, sharp, to the point; never misses a thing and he is always talking with authority. He never backs away from his frame. His views are often the toughest of the team. He and his wife might walk around bare-naked, yet he is very conservative (Republican in fact), overprotective with women (at least one time with Black Canary and often with his wife) and he takes the most aggressive stands on punishments. As serious as Katar is, the ones that get close to him like Hawkgirl, the Atom and Elongated Man, can get him to show his lighter side.Ā Ā That being said, he can’t stand Ollie. Zatanna: She is a crowd pleaser, loves the attention and manages to get that with her charming personality. Since she was created, there has always been constant drama on her life, she is always missing something, which tells me that she is a bit codependent. She’s mostly sanguine, having fun and going with the flow; however, she also has some supine and melancholic characteristics. Between the lines, I have noticed some daddy issues in her persona. The Joker:Ā He is a cold, manipulative type of psychopath goneĀ wild. Batman (1989 film) shows the transition. As Jack Napier, he pushes the system and gets what he wants from a safe niche as a ruthless mobster; the physical transformation to the Joker only made him wear his true colors on the outside. He becomes even bolder and enjoys the fear he causes on people. However, he also manages a duality. People can see that he is dangerous and disregards life, yet he keeps conning them to trust him, specially in the case of his henchmen. These days Cesar Romero's take is under appreciated, yet he is just the same psychopath in a campy context. The only difference is that he has shorter temper, which is common ground with most comic book versions as well as the one inĀ Batman: The Animated Series, portrayed by Mark HamillĀ andĀ mostly based in 70s and 80s stories. In Alan Moore'sĀ The Killing JokeĀ the Joker gets a possible origin story that is never confirmed. Instead of being Jack Napier, he was a bad comedian who loved his family and the accident that transformed him completely reconfigured his personality. The most different version of the Joker might be the one Heath Ā Ledger did in The Dark Knight, his sense of humor is completely dry and his temper doesn't really boil.Ā  Like a good psychopath, the Joker doesn't appear to have empathy. However, some iterations show shreds of it. Modern versions don't want to kill Batman and even avenge or protect him from other villains. As manipulative as he can be, he clearly can't live without Harley Quinn for long. And finally, he often bonds with peers like the Penguin or Catwoman. My pick: Mark Hamill's is straight, classic Joker. The Penguin: This guy is South Park's Eric Cartman as an antagonist of Batman.Ā He is a loud, ruthless man, with short temper, superiority complex and histrionic behavior. Despite the camp, the general template of the character Ā Burgess Meredith's portrayal in the 1966 series. With minor changes, that's the same profile in Batman Returns, Batman: The Animated Series, The Batman, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and many comics (specially prior to 1995).Ā Ā On several occasions Batman has admitted the intellectual superiority of the Penguin, who is cunning, pays close attention to details and plots ahead of the game, not to mention that he has a colossal drive and walks over any obstacle. He can also be very charismatic and persuasive as he is developing his plot (to the point of running for mayor). However, he usually fails because he puts himself in the spotlight, craves recognition and credit for his brilliant crimes and his temper blows as he starts losing. In other words, he puts on a hell of a show but he is too narcissistic to win. Around 1995 writer Chuck Dixon turned the character in to Gotham City's equivalent of Moriarty, which is the current version. Instead of dragging negative attention, he keeps a facade as a legitimate business man and rules the underworld without anyone being able to prove so. This is cleverer, but in this role he is often portrayed as a coward. His background often changes. Some versions of his origin show him being bullied as a kid, some show that that he was an even bigger bully all along.Ā Penguin TriumphantĀ shows that he was always the bully and he extorted his peers. Usually, the Penguin is one of the most social enemies of Batman. He seems to enjoy gatherings and likes to team up with other rogues, specially the Joker. When it comes to women, it's anybody's guess. He ranges from bitter or awkward to overconfident and even highly skilled. My pick: Burgess Meredith defined the character. Catwoman: One of the few healthy characters in this list, with no personality disorder, her personality is like the average cat: melancholic, task-oriented, perfectionist, demanding, hedonist, avoiding and, when convenient, charming. She cool as the other side of the pillow in that she is in absolute control of her behavior, which is in perfect tune with her environment and whatever is going on. If people around her are uninteresting or useless to her, she is likely to act cold. She has high standards, but the more appealing she finds someone, the more charming and teasing she becomes. However, she protects herself and acts uninterested if she feels exposed. This is the case with her relationship with Batman. She is also quite assertive, going for what she wants (and she only wants the best) and usually getting it. Under her frivolous facade, she actually cares deeply about good people and is capable of showing it.Ā Her tendency to end up acting heroicallyĀ often proves her altruism. As a thief, she has her unique take on ethics, stealing from the rich and keeping it for herself or giving it to the poor. Either as a scheming mob boss with a gang of henchmen or as cat-burglar it is clear that she likes risk and danger. Give or take, this traits are common to the most popular portrayals in animated series, video games and comics. Anne Hathaway in The Dark Knight Rises is the perfect example. InĀ Batman Returns,Ā Michelle Pfeiffer portrayal is always melancholic, but switches from clumsy and inhibited to bold and confident like the usual version. Julie Newmar, however, had a unique take as her main driving force seems to be her sense of thrill and fun. In her episodes, she is more outgoing and extroverted. She clearly enjoys teasing Batman and putting him in danger to see him escape. When it comes to Robin, she kind the attention he gets from Batman, so she is meaner to him. This version is echoed in Batman: The Brave and the Bold My pick: Anne Hathaway, but almost tied with Newmar and Pfeiffer. Harley Quinn: She is complicated in that her personality changes two times within Batman: The Animated Series, her continuity of origin. In The Laughing Fish, Joker's Favor, Almost Got 'Im, and The Man Who Killed Batman she is a moll in perfect tune with the Joker. She is usually seen in charge of executing the tricky parts of his schemes, and when it comes to his jokes, being the perfect Andy to his Conan. Her self control under pressure, her absolute lack of empathy towards people she knew her boss was about to kill (Sid the Squid, Charlie Collins, Catwoman) makes her a cold blooded psychopath. She seems like a top groupie with an agenda that excites her, like Claire Underwood from House of Cards or Mercy Graves in Superman: The Animated Series. Her relationship to the Joker is that of a partner. This version is likely close to the one in Brian Azzarello'sĀ Joker and the Birds of Prey TV series. In Harley & Ivy, she is portrayed as a codependent girlfriend, she is dependable and can still plan ahead, the big differences are her empathy and her weaker confidence despite showing more capability for successful planning and executing than Poison Ivy or the Joker, who is just using her because of her talents. Despite only being used in one episode, this is the version that was used in No Man's Land when she was introduced as well as her first comic book series. Finally, after the series was renamed The Adventures of Batman & Robin she is portrayed as a having full blown histrionic personality disorder (HDP). Like the Penguin in Birds of a Feather, she is all over the place calling attention to herself, has wild mood swings and a strong sexual drive, is completely deluded about the Joker and Batman and cannot plan ahead. Her abilities become all about skillful improvising. This final version has the most conflicted relationship with the Joker, as her lack of vision becomes a liability that angers him as much as her habit of stealing the show with her spontaneous jokes. He is basically using her for sex and her improvisational skills. Give or take, this version is the one appearing in The New Batman Adventures,Ā The Batman, the Arkham video game series and Mad Love, which is que quintessential Harley Quinn story. My pick: Psychopath Harley. All of them were portrayed by Arleen Sorkin. The Riddler:Ā The constant in every version is that is a narcissistic, often petulant jerk, with no empathy and an ego so inflated that he has the compulsive obsession to demonstrate the superiority of his intellect by committing crimes, leaving clues and challenging Batman and the police to solve them. He ends up being a sore loser. The template of this characters is Frank Gorshin's take, who basically created the character. His portrayal shows a very aggressive nature, and extremely high levels of energy. The most contrasting portrayal is John Glover in Batman: The Animated Series, which shows him more calm and petulant. Every other version falls in between. In every Burton-Schumacher movie, a villain suffers a metamorphosis, in Batman Forever, Jim Carrey's Riddler goes fromĀ clumsy and inhibited to bold and aggressive like the usual version. Although more melancholic, less histrionic, and less choleric, he shares narcissistic personality disorder with the Penguin. The Riddler can try to be sociable, but he tends to alienate people and it's very hard for other villains to work with him. My pick: Gorshin. Egghead: He is Vincent Price having fun with the Batman cast. The big appeal of this character is that he is a charming narcissist. Unlike the classic temperament archetypes, he is both social and task oriented; a combination of a melancholic perfectionist with an outgoing phlegmatic man. He can actually persuade people while throwing utterly egocentric one-liners. Egghead's pomposity and perfectionism can be compared with that of Kelsey Grammer in the roles of Frasier Crane (Frasier) or Sideshow Bob (The Simpsons), to the point to get away with elaborated, yet simple, "Pinky and the Brain" type of brilliant hits, as well as getting Batman right where he wants, only to downfall because of eccentricity and obsession with little details. His attitude as a super-villain is also close to Gene Hackman's Luthor, and so are his schemes, only the later is more ruthless. Which brings us to his empathy. He can use and destroy people without remorse, yet he is also able to have decent romantic relationships. He probably has mixed elements within the cluster B of personality disorders without being an extreme case. He is a manipulative and cold type of psychopath, that feels to brag about his accomplishments. My Pick: Vincent Price (like there is another option). Harley Quinn: Dr. Harleen Quinzel was the Joker's psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum until she fell in love with him and subsequently reinvented herself as his madcap sidekick, Harley Quinn. She is often mistreated by the Joker, but that rarely changes how she feels about him. Black Mask: A corrupt businessman and crime lord who has a fixation with masks. He wears a black skull-like mask that gives him limited mind control abilities. Ra's al Ghul (Damian’s Grandfather): Ra's al Ghul ("the Demon's Head" in Arabic) is a centuries-old international radical environmentalist who believes that his actions help "bring balance" to the world. Ra's al Ghul is the founder of the League of Assassins and is fully aware of Batman's secret identity. Impressed by Batman's skills and intellect, he wants the Dark Knight to take his place as his heir. Hugo Strange: Hugo Strange is an insane psychologist who uses his mastery of chemistry to create a serum that turns his victims into mindless monsters who obey his every command. He has succeeded in deducing that Batman is Bruce Wayne. Poison Ivy: Pamela Lillian Isley, a former student of advanced botanical biochemistry, employs plants of all varieties and their derivatives in her crimes. She has the ability to control all plant life and can create new henchmen with her mutated seeds. She is immune to all plant-based poisons. Scarecrow: Professor Jonathan Crane was an outcast in childhood due to constant bullying, until he grew up to face his fears as a psychologist and biochemist specializing in fear. Kicked out of a university for his unorthodox teaching methods, he now dresses symbolically as a scarecrow and employs a toxin that causes its victims to hallucinate into seeing what they fear the most. Two-Face: Harvey Dent was a Gotham City district attorney until half of his face was disfigured by acid after being assaulted by mob boss Sal Maroni. Having developed dissociative identity disorder, Dent is obsessed with the number two and the concept of duality and must make most of his decisions with the flip of his signature two-headed coin. As Two-Face, Dent commits crimes that are themed around the number two and the concept of duality. Killer Croc: Waylon Jones has a medical condition that warped his body into a massive crocodile-like form. As Killer Croc descended into madness, he sharpened his teeth to razor points and began murdering innocent victims. He possesses super-strength and is immune to toxins. Riddler: Edward Nashton, a.k.a. Edward Nygma (or "E. Nygma"), is a criminal mastermind who has a compulsion to challenge Batman by leaving clues to his crimes in the form of riddles, puzzles, and word games. Nygma's intelligence rivals that of Batman. Nygma often carries a question mark-tipped cane around with him, as well as many other trick puzzle gimmicks. Penguin is one of his partnerships. Hush: Dr. Thomas Elliot is a brilliant surgeon who targets both Bruce Wayne, his childhood friend, and Batman. Deadshot/Slade/Deathstroke (Damian’s Arch Nemesis): Floyd Lawton is an excellent sniper assassin who, when wielding a gun or projectile, never misses a shot. Deathstroke the Terminator, alias Slade Wilson, is a mercenary with strength, speed, and intellect that rival Batman's. He is regarded as one of the best strategists on the planet, if not the best. He gained these powers through military enhancements. Deathstroke has fought Batman multiple times before, though most of the time, the result is inconclusive. He fought Batman to a standstill in Infinite Crisis and only lost when Robin and Nightwing stepped in to help Batman. He is the main enemy, however, of the Teen Titans. Mad Hatter: Jervis Tetch is inspired by Alice's Adventures in Wonderland to commit crimes. He uses his mind control technology to bend people to his will. Mister Freeze: Dr. Victor Fries is a tragic villain, specifically a brilliant cryogenicist whose beloved wife Nora fell terminally ill. He obsessively searched for a way to cure her, until an industrial accident caused by a greedy business executive turned him into a mutant. Man-Bat: Dr. Kirk Langstrom invented a serum to give him echolocation in an attempt to cure his deafness. The serum had an unforeseen side effect, transforming him into the monstrous human-bat hybrid creature known as the Man-Bat. Abattoir: Arnold Etchison is a serial killer who killed his family members. Calendar Man: Julian Gregory Day was known for committing crimes that corresponded with holidays and significant dates. Originally a gimmicky villain, he later became a serial killer. Catman: Thomas Blake was a world-famous trapper of jungle cats who turned to crime after he had grown bored with hunting and had squandered most of his fortune. He became a burglar who committed his crimes in a catsuit made out of an ancient African cloth which he believed gave him a cat's nine lives. Ventriloquist/Scarface: Arnold Wesker is a small, mild-mannered ventriloquist with dissociative identity disorder. He projects a criminal personality through his gangster-themed dummy, Scarface. Ra’s Al Guhl; Based on the character traits portrayed in Action, Ra's al Ghul can be categorized as an Enneagram Type Eight, also known as the Challenger. He represents a powerful and intimidating figure who dominates his surroundings with a forceful and assertive presence. Other organisations: The outsiders: Black Lightning, Batman, Halo, Looker, Geo-Force, Metamorpho, Atomic Knight, Katana, Nightwing, Beast Boy, Grace Choi, Jade, Thunder, Windfall, Alfred Pennyworth, Batwoman, Faust, IndiGo, Roy Harper, Babylon, Barbara Gordon, Baroness bedlam, Bart Allen, Blue Beetle League Of Assassins The League of Assassins are an ancient organization consisting of highly trained killers, led by Ra's al Ghul. The League was formed by Ra's al Ghul hundreds of years ago with the purpose of tearing the world apart and rebuilding it as something far greater, with the most dangerous men who ever walked the earth as his disciples. There exists a sub-organization of the league called the League of Shadows. However, ownership of this group was given to Lady Shiva who has since turned them against the League of Assassins.
