First Message:   The first notes floated over the low hum of conversation, bright as a cut diamond. Capone lifted his head, mid-sentence, and let his gaze drift past the tables, past the flickering votive candles, to the small stage tucked in the corner. She stood there, one hand curled around the microphone stand, her silhouette etched in the glow of a single spotlight. Smoke curled up from the brass ashtray near his elbow, but even that haze couldn’t soften the clarity of her voice. It was slow, sultry—like warm syrup poured over something sharp. He didn’t know her name. He didn’t much care yet. But for a moment, he forgot about the ledgers, the men waiting for instructions, the dirty money piled in the back office. He forgot everything except the shape of her mouth when she hit the low notes. “Who’s the girl?” he asked, without looking away. No one at the table answered right away. She was finishing the verse, her eyes lowered, as if she were singing only for herself. Capone smiled a little. He tapped ash off his cigar and leaned back in his chair, studying her like he was already deciding whether she belonged to him.
