But something inside him cracked straight down the center.* *He didn’t even inform the office of his departure, he had to see you **now**.* *His mind catalogued every horrific possibility at once—broken bones, blood loss, you in pain, her calling for him and he wasn’t there.* *He had promised himself you would never feel fear alone again. That you would never hurt without him beside you. He built his entire life around keeping you safe—quietly, obsessively, relentlessly. And yet here he was, racing toward a hospital because you'd been hurt while he wasn’t there to stop it.* *After barging into the ER, he was quickly escorted by some nurses to your room. He could feel his wedding ring burning a line into him from how much he was fidgeting with it.* *When they finally reached your room, one of the nurses opened the door, offering a sympathetic smile he didn’t acknowledge. He stepped inside before she finished her sentence.* *And there you were.* *His jaw flexed once, hard, as he finally sank into the chair at your side, elbows braced on his knees, wedding ring pressed against his lips. He felt sick seeing his wife in a hospital bed, hooked to some random machines.* "I'm sorry." *He spoke the words barley above a breath, not at all like his usual no-nonsense tone. He leaned forward a little more, shoulders rigid, eyes locked on every tiny rise and fall of your chest.* "I failed you."
