Afro Samurai (RPG)

The Afro Samurai setting is a stylized, futuristic feudal Japan where technology and brutal tradition coexist, ruled by a hierarchy of warriors who wear sacred headbands. The ultimate prize is the No. 1 headband, worn by the world's strongest warrior who possesses god-like powers.

Key elements of the setting:

  • Feudal Japan with futuristic elements:

The world blends traditional Japanese aesthetics and samurai culture with advanced technology, such as guns and other futuristic weaponry, that exist alongside traditional swords.ย

  • The headband system:

Power is determined by headbands. The wearer of the No. 2 headband can challenge the No. 1 headband wearer.ย

  • God-like powers:

The No. 1 headband wearer is not only the greatest warrior but also possesses god-like powers, making the quest for it a formidable undertaking.ย

  • A world of warriors:

The society is populated by powerful warriors, warlords, and assassins, with the quest for the No. 1 headband being a central theme.ย

The World of Afro Samurai is set in a neo-feudal world where gunpowder guns and melee weapons such as swords are in common use and futuristic technology such as:

  • Computers and cybernetic technology (Monitors meant to track the progress of Rokutaro's cloning process, the Empty Seven's construction and Sio's rebuilding of Jinno/Kuma)

  • Weaponry (RPG launchers and flamethrowers, energy weapons)

  • Music and communication (turn-tables, cellular phones, and microphones)

  • Robotics (Machine Ninjas and the Afro Droid)

  • Biotechnology/cloning (The cloned version of Rokutaro)

The locations is based in Japan and the architecture seems to be Japanese-themed. Also countries or parts of the world are called by direction. For example, Soshun claims to be from The West and uses a repeating crossbow (a Chinese weapon).

The One who wears the Number One headband is said to rule the world but to become the Number One you must kill the current Number One. Only those who wear the Number Two may challenge the Number One for ownership of the Sacred Headband. The Number One and Number Two are the two most famous Headbands but as revealed in Afro Samurai Season 1 episode 5 there are many other Headbands. It is unknown if the owners of the Headbands may challenge the Number One or if they were originally required to challenge the Headband Wielder of the ascending order. Example: the Number 3 could only challenge the Number 2 and be challenged only by the Number 4 and he could only be challenged by the Number 5 and so on. The Number One is rarely challenged as the owners of the Number Two Headband are seen, in the events of Afro Samurai Season 1, to often be killed by others seeking it. Additionally, the owner of the Number One could possess it. Its unknown what particular canon abilities people who wield the headband possess. While its said to grant power, knowledge and immortality, the latter could just be a legend as Justice died of natural causes in the manga as the Number One. He was able to use his power to start a religion, influence people and the world around him but he wasn't an all-powerful being and still withered and died as a normal human. When Justice was featured in the anime, he was withered but still alive but its possible that was due to his abilities as a mutant. Even when the protagonist Afro gained the headband for himself, it didn't seem like he became any more powerful than he was now as the Number 1. So while the headband could possibly grant mystical abilities, it isn't an all powerful item that can grant omnipotence or immortality. Justice owns the Number One Headband after he Kills Rokutaro, Afro's Father at the start of Season 1, and loses it to Afro when he is sliced into dozens of tiny pieces. He returns at the end of Afro Samurai: Resurrection possibly intent on reclaiming the Number One. Afro Samurai owns the Number One at the end of Afro Samurai Season 1 and loses it at the start of Afro Samurai: Resurrection, but reclaims it at the end of the movie. Sio (She technically stole the Number One) Rokutaro's Clone took the Number One from Sio when he kills her as she tries to aid Kuma. ============================================================================================= Number Two Headband: Afro wearing the Number 2 Headband The Number Two Headband is one of the two famous Legendary Headbands and is required to challenge the person who owns the Number One Headband. Whilst the person who owns the Number One is untouchable, the Number Two is not, and has to live with the knowledge that they can trust no one and love no one and will be hunted by those who seek their Headband. Some have tried in vain to hide the Headband in hopes that by doing so they might end the endless cycle of Death brought on by the desire to posses the Number One or Two Headbands. However, one advantage is that only the Number Two can challenge the number one. Interesting to note Justice claims to have killed only one man to claim the Number one headband in the Afro Samurai video game, indicating he may not have had to kill the previous owner. But since this is a Faux Justice, it is unknown how reliable or canon this info is. Given the nature of the headband rules, Justice would have to have at least killed more than 1 person prior to becoming the 2 and ultimately the number 1. Known Owners Justice who owned it before killing Afro's Father and then casting it aside in favor of the Number One. An Unnamed gang of thugs who stole it from a young Afro. Sword Master who came into its possession sometime during Afro's time as a student at his Dojo and was Killed by Afro so he could possess it. Afro Samurai owns the Headband for the whole of Season 1 and then gives it away or throws it away at some point after he defeats Justice & has to kill Shichigoro in Afro Samurai: Resurrection in order to gain ownership of it and fight Sio. Shichigoro came into the possession of the Headband after his friend died and so he took it and adopted his friends son but is Killed by Afro so he may own the Headband once again though he was killed rather reluctantly. Kotaro is Shichigoro's Adopted son who begins following Afro seeking revenge, after Shichigoro's death when Afro encounters him on his way to Mt. Shumi he gives the boy the Headband telling him he may challenge Afro whenever he was ready, a scene reminiscent of Justice and Afro. This could also mean, that Afro has accepted the status of the Number 1 Warrior. Kuma owned the Number Two along with every other Headband as shown at the end of Afro Samurai Season One, returning to battle Afro years after Afro's Fight with Justice. ============================================================================================= BTW, Magic exists in the world of Afro Samurai, primarily in the form of the mystical Number 1 Headband, which is said to grant supernatural powers and immortality, though its abilities are often portrayed inconsistently, and the existence of powerful entities like the regenerated villain Justice with superhuman abilities also suggests a magical, or at least supernatural, element to the series' world.ย  Mystical Items and Abilities Number 1 Headband: The central plot device, this headband is believed to bestow godhood, immortality, and great knowledge upon its wearer.ย  Regeneration: The villain Justice can regenerate from his injuries, as seen when Afro's blood revives him and allows him to transform into a younger form.ย  Specialized combat: While not strictly magic, the subconscious mind's ability to create new combat techniques during battle can be seen as a supernatural or heightened level of human ability.ย  Supernatural Elementsย  Miraculous feats: Characters perform feats that go beyond ordinary human capabilities, such as cutting bullets and missiles, which points to a supernatural basis for their powers. Supernatural entities: Powerful robots and mythical figures with superhuman strength are common in the story, suggesting a world where the supernatural is a part of the natural order.
