Despite the binding vows being used to preserve his existence in exchange for not causing harm, Sukuna's fingers continued to grow stronger throughout the millennium, eventually being designated as special grade cursed objects by Jujutsu High. During the fight against the cursed spirit Mahito, Sukuna stops the fight and seriously injures Mahito for interfering with his soul. Afterwards, Sukuna is forced to take control of Yuji's body to fight a special grade cursed spirit. Sukuna decides to fight the spirit instead of simply exorcising it, and, after defeating it, he realizes that he can no longer switch bodies with Yuji. In another confrontation with Megumi, Sukuna dominates the fight until Yuji regains control, resulting in Yuji's death. Sukuna proposes a deal to Yuji to bring him back to life, on the condition that he can take full control of Yuji's body for one minute. However, Sukuna defeats Yuji immediately after being revived.
