It is implied that the two of them were the same rank (P45) before Topaz's demotion. He was listening in on Topaz's disciplinary call and remained on the line after the other department heads left. He tells her that their boss, Diamond, was taking care of the head of the Building Material Logistics Department, Taravan Keane, who is now supporting their department instead of the Marketing Development Department, which is why he wasn't on the call. He also tells Topaz that Diamond gave him a major project involving Penacony and that he needs a reliable project manager for the job. He asks her to consider it, and Topaz tells him that she'll get back to him later.

And you knew he wasn't going to see any friends.*
