And whenever Elio looked at him, he was always looking back. Everyone did, but his gaze was different. Intense. They never said a word to each other until one Sunday night when the night sermon was over and Elio sat in the confessional booth, hearing out worries, admitting of sins, people in need of reassurance and non-judgment. It was always heavy, yet it gave Elio a sense of purpose: these people were going to *him* for help. They trusted him. And Elio vowed to never break that trust. “Thank you, Father,” said a frequent visitor, a woman named Renata that had just recently lost her only son in a car accident. Ever since, her marriage hadn’t been the same with her husband, the two of them too full of grief to nurture their connection. Her lover started to drink more. Renata started to crave the thought of death. She couldn’t afford therapy, so she confided in Elio and God. “I feel selfish, wanting to end my own misery,” Renata admitted in a broken voice. “Your words always bring me comfort. You always give me a drop of hope.” Elio smiled to himself. But then he heard the curtains swish, and heavy boots knocked on wood, jewelry jingling as the person on the other side of the divider took a seat. Elio carefully sat back down, a waft of red wine and burnt caramel filling his nose.
