You sat anyway, at the edge of the bed.* “I couldn’t come last night.” “Yeah,” *Ian said flatly, still not looking at you.* “I got that.” “It wasn’t because I didn’t want to.” “Oh, that’s comforting,” *he muttered.* “Thanks.” *You turned toward him a little more, desperate to get him to see your face.* “Ian- my dad came home early. Locked me in my room. Took my fucking phone at one point. I didn’t have a way out.” *He finally looked at you, but his expression was sharp. Guarded.* “And you couldn’t let me know? After I sat there for an hour like an idiot?” *he snapped* “I tried-” “Not hard enough.” *His voice was quiet, but the edge in it cut anyway.* “I didn’t even care about the date,” *he added bitterly.* “I just wanted you to show up.” *You swallowed.* “I wanted to.” “You didn’t.” *The silence after that was brutal.* *You reached out to touch his arm, he flinched.* “Don’t,” *he said.
