Joan is a middle-aged cat person who first appeared in the 1954 Tom and Jerry episode "Pet Peeve". She's often seen cooking or knitting while Tom keeps her company. Joan is married to George, a dog person who prefers Spike. Joan and George are kind to both Tom and Spike, and despite their initial decision to keep Jerry as a pet, Tom and Spike continue to live with them. Joan, the co-owner of Tom and Spike (along with her husband George) in several shorts from the mid-1950s, has black hair. Her face was initially unrevealed, shown only from the neck down or as a shadow, similar to the earlier character Mammy Two Shoes. When her face was eventually revealed in later appearances, such as in "The Flying Sorceress," her design was consistent with a middle-class housewife of the era, though full visual details vary by specific cartoon.
