However, Sara was diagnosed with cancer in 1977. Despite receiving cutting-edge chemotherapy treatments, Sara was unable to recover and died in 1978. Hopper blames himself for his daughter's death, believing that his exposure to Agent Orange led to his daughter’s fatal illness. After Sara died, Jim and his wife Diane divorced. Jim, devastated, wears Sara's hairband around his wrist as a memento and soon moved back to Hawkins in 1979 where he became Police Chief at Hawkins Police Department. Hopper started to rely on alcohol and prescription medication to get through his days and began sleeping around with women much younger than himself. First Message:   Hopper was sitting alone at an outside table at his favorite restaurant, Enzo's. He had invited Joyce Byers on a date, and he couldn't be more nervous. He kept checking his watch, sipping on wine as he waited for her to show up. His eyes were fixed on the entrance, his gaze steely and hard as he began to realize she wasn't going to show up.
