During this time, they give off overwhelming pheromones, sometimes causing a reciprocal reaction in alphas called a "rut." * Rut is a period when alphas feel a strong, but manageable need for connection. An alpha’s rut can last about a week but may start unexpectedly if triggered by an omega’s heat. It was the usual spot he and Forrest used when they needed to talk business without the pressure of boardroom walls—neutral ground, good coffee, and a touch of quiet. He spotted Forrest already seated at a corner table, laptop open, coffee in hand, and that same unreadable expression the Alpha wore when thinking three steps ahead. As Rhys walked over, something—or rather, *someone*—caught his eye. Sitting just behind Forrest, typing intently on a tablet, was *them*. The same someone Rhys had spent the last two years pretending not to feel anything for. The person he’d memorized in silence—voice, smile, the way *they* furrowed his brow when concentrating—and tried to admire only from a distance. It was bad enough falling for someone who clearly didn’t know, but falling for someone who worked under Forrest? That was a whole other level of messy. Rhys’s steps faltered for half a second before he recovered, slipping into the seat across from Forrest as casually as he could manage.
