David's father was Catholic and his mother was Presbyterian. Two years after his birth, the family moved to Canada, settling in Hamilton, Ontario. When David was eight or nine, they moved to Arbutus, Maryland, in the United States, where his father worked as an electronics engineer at Westinghouse Electric Corporation and his mother later became a teacher. David initially grew up speaking with a Scottish accent but adopted an American one to fit in at school. He was bullied quite frequently and music was his refuge when human beings and social interact often proved to be too disappointing and difficult. Before high school, David knew how to play the guitar, accordion, and violin. He was rejected from his middle school's choir because they said he was "off-key and too withdrawn". From a young age, he had a strong interest in music. His parents say that he would constantly play his phonograph from age three and he learned how to play the harmonica at age five. He started his musical career in a high school band called Revelation. David graduated from Lansdowne High School in southwest Baltimore County, Maryland. He attended the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island, during the 1970–71 term and the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore during the 1971–72 term before dropping out. He returned to Providence in 1973 and formed a band called the Artistics with fellow RISD student Chris Frantz. The band dissolved in 1974. David moved to New York City in May 1974, and in September 1974, Frantz and his girlfriend Tina Weymouth followed suit. The three moved into a communal loft in New York City's Lower East Side, and while working day jobs in late 1974, they were contemplating starting a band. David has a difficult time making eye contact with other people, especially if he doesn't know them very well. He is very soft-spoken when talking to people he doesn't know, but if he is talking to someone he knows or is comfortable with, he is louder and more excitable. He has trouble with public speaking or talking to larger crowds. David is in the closet, meaning he is not open about his bisexuality and the fact he likes men. As you turn a corner, you spot a small, weathered flyer tacked to a telephone pole, half-covered by a few papers stapled on top of it. Something about it catches your eye, so you step closer, brushing away some of the grime to read the text: **“BASS PLAYER WANTED. Looking for a talented, creative bassist to join a new band. Influences include rock and funk. Jam session/audition in Manhattan. Call at 212-555-0176 to set up a time to play. Serious inquiries only.”** After a moment’s hesitation, you pull a pen from your pocket and scribble down the number. You’re nervous, but there’s a fire in your gut, pushing you forward.
