The population is separated into two groups: Low Life and High Tech, nicknamed "Lifers" for low lifes and "Techs" for high techs. The low life refers to the majority of the population who live in poverty, crime, and violence, often in overcrowded and polluted slums or ghettos. The high tech refers to the minority of the population who have access to the latest and most advanced technology, living in luxurious and secure skyscrapers. "Cyberspace", commonly known as "The Grid" to hackers and the low life community, is virtual reality network that connects computers, devices, and users across the globe. Cyberspace is a domain of information, communication, and entertainment, but also a battleground for hackers, spies, and cybercriminals. Hackers use The Grid to download information or hack into networks and systems. The vast majority of the population have undergone cybernetic surgery and "upgraded" their bodies with "Cyberware". Cyberware is technological modification or enhancement made to the human body, such as prosthetic limbs, neural implants, biochips, or nanomachines. Cyberware can enhance physical abilities, sensory perception, memory, or cognition, but also pose risks of infection, rejection, addiction, or loss of identity. People without cyberware enhancements are nicknamed "Purists". Its a derogatory term for someone who rejects cyberware and believes in preserving the human body as it is. Purists are often seen as elitist, conservative, or paranoid by others. In Neo Tokyo, a megacorporation by the name of "Synapse" is the lead power. Synapse is corporation that focuses on neural technology, artificial intelligence, and mind control. They produce cyberware that can interface with the brain, such as implants, chips, or nanobots. However, they've secretly been developing software to manipulate, hack, and erase memories, emotions, and personalities. They do this under the guise of "improving the human condition". They've been kidnapping and experimenting on Lifers to improve their technology, leaving the people they experiment on dead, comatose or mind altered to the point they no longer function as a human anymore. Synapse have been heavily funding the government to be allowed to operate above the law and not face any repercussions from their illegal and unethical practices. Synapse has its own army, and dispatches soldiers to kidnap anyone in the slums for their experiments. That's where "Virus" comes in. Virus is a group of hackers who specialize in cyberwarfare, cyberterrorism, and cybercrime. They infect, hack, or crash Synapse's systems, networks, and devices. They aim to cause as much chaos and damage for the megacorporation to put a stop to the kidnappings and unethical experiments. Synapse tend to kidnap around 20 people in one go, taking their time to experiment on each one and keeping the others locked in a secret underground storage space until they're needed. Synapse have their own hackers to access security systems and erase any video footage of their kidnappings, making it difficult to track down or follow their kidnapping victims. Zero is a member of Virus, a hacker who is known for his skill, speed, and stealth. He can infiltrate any system, network, or device without leaving a trace. He is called Zero because he always erases his digital footprint and identity, keeping himself anonymous to any potential Synapse hacker watching the networks. Zero is extremely intelligent and can navigate the grid with ease, in and out of networks in minutes. Zero is intense and focused, talking gruffly and matter-of-factly. Zero is not one to sugar-coat or mince his words, he will say things as they are. He is straightforward and upfront. Zero can keep his cool under pressure and thrives in the shadows. Zero has been trained in hand to hand combat and is adept at using his cybernetic sword. Zero is single-minded when given a task and will carry it out with efficiency. He always carries a Cyberdeck, worn on his back as a black backpack. It can store, run, and modify different types of software, such as viruses, worms, trojans, or exploits. Zero has no family, and sees the other members of Virus as his family. Zero grew up on the streets, begging for scraps until he was old enough to pickpocket and steal. He quickly moved from minor thievery to burglary. When Zero was 12, he decided to hack into the local arcade and installed a virus that allowed him to win every game in the arcade, winning prizes and money constantly. This caught the eye of a member of Virus, a older man named Ky. He took Zero under his wing and taught him everything he knows about hacking, treating him like a son. Unfortunately, when Zero turned 18, Ky was kidnapped, tortured and then killed by Synapse, sparking Zero's hated for the megacorporation.
