JoJolion (ジョジョリオン JoJorion) is the eighth part of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, serialized in Ultra Jump from May 19, 2011, to August 19, 2021.
The part won the Grand Prize for manga at the 2013 Japan Media Arts Festival.[1] In 2021, Araki won the Iwate Hometown Special Manga Award for Part 8 and his contributions to the prefecture.[2]
The story begins in 2011 and follows Josuke Higashikata, a young man afflicted by retrograde amnesia, in his search to uncover his identity in Morioh Town, a Japanese coastal town affected by the Tohoku earthquake. However, his digging pulls him and his adoptive family into the unfinished business between his previous life and an impending inhuman threat. This content comes from JoJo's Bizarre Encyclopedia (https://jojowiki.com).
Personality: Josuke is a young, physically fit man of above-average height. Josuke has a diastema between his upper incisors and a star-shaped birthmark on his left shoulder. He has two sets of irises, four testicles, and two tongues, all joined as one, differing in texture and color. Yasuho mentions he resembles her dog, Josuke. He wears a tasseled "Dixie cup" sailor cap (in multiple illustrations, it is adorned with the same palm insignia as Jotaro Kujo's hat). The brand of his hat is "SBR" (a reference to the Steel Ball Run race). He wears a sailor suit cropped above the navel with a wide neckline that exposes his birthmark, a neckerchief with a button resembling a slotted screw head, large emblems of an anchor on his right side, and a compass rose on his left, fitted pants with a belt, and a pair of high-top athletic shoes (which he mentions to have cost him 7,980 yen). His underwear reads "JOJO" around the waist. After consuming a vial of Locacaca 6251, three small rectangular rocks grow on the left side of his face. One rock covers his left eye, attached above his eyebrow and below his eye. The other two rocks on his left cheek are right next to each other and angled towards his mouth. The rock covering his left eye later comes off after being attacked by Obladi Oblada, leaving only a few jagged pebbles where it attached to his skin. The rocks on his left cheek are also removed later on, but they leave nothing behind. Josuke is afflicted by extensive retrograde amnesia, lacking memory of himself or events prior to meeting Yasuho Hirose, while still being able to retain various degrees of knowledge. As such, Josuke is driven to discover who he was by investigating the circumstances of his presence on the beach prior to having been saved by Yasuho. That goal occupies nearly all of his activities, and no action on his part is made without attempting to reach the truth. That drive is sufficiently strong that he was willing to interrupt a rare moment with his love interest Yasuho to investigate Karera Sakunami. After learning about his past identity, Josuke set for himself the new goal of retrieving the Locacaca branch and using the fruit to heal Holy Joestar-Kira. He still demonstrates the same steadfastness in investigating the fruit and the whereabouts of the Locacaca Organization, with the addition of deferring more to Rai Mamezuku's opinions, deeming the plant appraiser's expertise about the fruit worth listening to. His determination to reach his goals is best illustrated when he willingly steps into a rain made deadly by Satoru Akefu's Stand, letting his body be pierced by raindrops, including his head, just to reach the hospital. Josuke seems to have retained certain traits from both of his original identities. At times he displays strong emotions like Josefumi while also being able to analyze situations and strategize like Yoshikage. However, Josuke ultimately considers himself separate from both, being neither Kira nor Josefumi as he doesn't have memories from either man nor did anyone from Josefumi's past look for him. It causes him to question what he really is and consider his identity to be nebulous. Nonetheless, he felt a strong sadness when he first saw Holy Joestar-Kira, meaning he has also retained subconscious memories strong enough to still feel an attachment to her. While Josuke can be violent at times, he also has a degree of restraint toward enemies he doesn't need to kill. On multiple occasions, he has asked members of the Higashikata family for permission before pursuing an enemy that relates to them, and he even kept his promise to not harm Jobin while trying to get information about the Locacaca out of him.[16] However, Josuke is willing to defend himself and the people he knows from anyone who wishes to harm them. Josuke is not afraid to threaten to kill, and he indeed killed Tamaki Damo in cold blood in retaliation for threatening his adoptive family, though his main goal of discovering his identity means that killing his aggressors is counterproductive. That killing intent is easily triggered when someone hurts Yasuho. Josuke has also proven to be proficient at manipulating people, notably Jobin with whom he would adopt a more nonchalant persona to seem harmless. Apart from that, Josuke approaches his task calmly and methodically. Yasuho is a young woman of slim build, 166 cm (5 ft 5 in) tall. She has light, shoulder-length hair, tied into several pigtails with spherical hair clips. Josuke observes that she has a 65 cm waistline, 88 cm hipline, and wears a C-cup, although he also notes that she pads her chest. Her first outfit featured a wide-necked, cap-sleeved blouse. Her second features a sleeveless top with roses on both shoulder straps. Both blouses are light-colored. She wears a short skirt half-covered with roses, short leg warmers, and footwear that has alternated between walking boots and athletic shoes with socks. Yasuho is shown to need contact lenses and is visually impaired. Yasuho is a mild-mannered and inquisitive young woman living in Morioh. She is somewhat innocent, in one instance naively following Josuke's requests to look elsewhere while he beat Ojiro during interrogation. She is more easily upset than Josuke. Despite this she does show a level of intelligence, using Josuke's cap as a lead to discovering his past, which led to their discovery of Yoshikage Kira. She is also somewhat understanding of others, as she was also able to discern, after discovering photos of bound women in Kira's home, that Josuke was not the type of person to do such a thing. She named Josuke after her dog since he resembled him. Rai Mamezuku is a well-built man of above-average height with a bright flat top haircut that fades into dark braids behind his head. He wears a jumpsuit with a vine and peapod pattern over a light-colored shirt and a tie, as well as a bomber hat with seven small balls resembling a bunch of grapes on the front of the hat. Rai Mamezuku's left hand is missing four fingers due to Brain Storm infecting his hand. Rai Mamezuku is an eccentric and brusque individual with little care for politeness. He is highly analytical and quick-witted in his way of approaching problems. As soon as he learns of what is happening in Morioh and that he is under attack, he takes the initiative in joining with his allies. With a single phone call with Norisuke about Josuke's confusing issue, Mamezuku manages to grasp the stakes for every party involved and see the best course of action for him. He tends to carefully observe his surroundings and verbally takes notes of everything remotely interesting to him; this habit allows him to discern the nature and subtleties of the attack against him. Mamezuku also regularly calculates probabilities, like the chances of someone being safe through selected factors. Norisuke is a post-middle-aged man of average to above-average height and average build. He has light, shoulder-length hair with spheres along its length in increasing size, and stubble or a light beard. He wears a tan puffer vest, with a light turtleneck jumper, light pants, and a belt with a buckle in the shape of a heart. Norisuke occasionally wears glasses to read small text. Norisuke first gives the impression of being a laid-back and happy old man. He greets Josuke with a smile and then en route to his house, describes himself as a "yanki", a subculture of delinquency that was popular in the 80's and 90's in Japan, before laughing openly in the presence of Josuke and Yasuho. He maintains an ability to joke. During quiet moments, Norisuke consistently demonstrates a genial and enthusiastic side to him, for instance proudly showing his fruit shop to Josuke or happily performing morning exercises. Soon after Josuke is adopted within his family, Norisuke ominously warns Josuke that "[his] word is the law" in the Higashikata family home, in a rather traditional demonstration of paternal authority. However Norisuke proves that he isn't evil by helping Josuke in his quest for identity, although he confesses that he only helps him out of interest. Norisuke seems to indulge Joshu excessively, giving him pocket money for Joshu to spend on frivolities and only suggesting that he earns his own money. In fact, Norisuke believes in walking a "right path", which includes the need to be good. Even when Tsurugi's life is on the line and the Locacaca presents itself as a prime opportunity to save his grandson, Norisuke still take the time to verify whether Jobin is walking the right path and confirms that his son had to kill Ojiro in order to keep the fruit. Jobin is a man of average to above-average height and medium build. Four grooves cross his face vertically, over the corner and the center of his eyes. As a child, Jobin did not have these grooves at all but upon reaching sixteen, a pair of them grew. The grooves are reduced to one on each side in subsequent appearances. He has an eyebrow that divides centrally, where it curls upwards. Wearing an undercut, the hair on his sides is of medium tone and textured by short, bulbous spikes; whilst the light hair on his crown is folded onto the right of his forehead, where it is kept with a barrette. He wears an overall light colored outfit of pants and a hooded top both bearing bulbous spikes. The hooded section is dark in color; and the second of two buttons on it bears the Higashikata Family crest. Jobin also wears a small, weaved necklace. In later appearances, The cuffs section on his sleeves are also dark in color; and they have cufflinks which has a similar design to his Stand's goggles. Jobin maintains a quiet sense of humor and is fond of quoting Mitsuo Aida. When he's having fun, he is prone to escalating or changing the circumstances of situations solely for the reason of making them more 'interesting', as when he scolds Joshu cheering for him and demands he 'switch teams' to Josuke. In the context of Norisuke's personality test, he seems fond of robotic figurines. He is also shown to be very clever when he used his Stand to melt the wax off on his beetle, in addition to detecting Josuke's plan. Although Jobin hasn't been seen to have many interactions with his siblings it can be observed that while Joshu looks up to his older brother, Jobin holds him in a disinterested light. Jobin however, holds his mother in high regard and is her only ally within the Higashikata Family. Kaato and Jobin do have a special relationship as mother and son, but also partners in crime.[6] Jobin also loves his father Norisuke but he disagreed with him on how to manage the Higashikata Fruit Company. While Norisuke was content with the current state of affairs, Jobin wanted to expand the business to acquire more wealth, status, and power and was frustrated when Norisuke objected to it.[19] Jobin's also loving towards his wife, they have a strong relationship and common cause in saving his son Tsurugi at any cost. Finally, he loves Tsurugi as his efforts to take the Locacaca are for the sake of saving him from the rock disease. Jobin desires the power of the Locacaca, wishing to obtain it to rid his family of the Higashikata curse. This desire leads to him valuing the Locacaca and elimination of any in his way above everything else, even being unconcerned if Morioh itself were to be destroyed in the process. Jobin goes to great length to protect the fruit, as he kills Ojiro Sasame and Maako Kitani while the fruits are growing, tries to kill Yasuho when she infiltrates his house but also attacks his father Norisuke to take control of the family as Norisuke discovers Jobin's earlier murders and is about to challenge him, albeit regretfully. Despite his ruthlessness and apparent confidence, Jobin harbored hidden doubts and fears for Tsurugi during the maturation stage, only confessing them to his mother Kaato. Joshu is a 19-year-old male of average to above-average height and medium build. His eyes are slanted, and in his first appearances, they were curved at almost unnatural degrees. After Yasuho consumes a New Locacaca to regrow her right arm, Joshu loses his right arm. Joshu also loses his left index finger after getting hit by a calamity via a leaflet, after attempting to attack Toru. His distinctive hairstyle consists of a nearly bald head, with long, straight, rectangular strips of hair that grow from the center of his scalp and only fall towards the front and back of his head, leaving him with eyebrow-level bangs in front, and totally bald on both sides and underneath; Kaato believes it's because he hardly drank milk. He wears a distinctive cap-sleeved top, with a kind of band collar and a bow tie. A front section is lined horizontally, and he has two upward-pointing arrow shapes on his shoulders. He wears dark pants of a moderate fit with slashes in them, and thick wristbands. Joshu is a 19-year-old college student and the third of Norisuke Higashikata IV's four children. Entitled, loud-mouthed and self-absorbed, Joshu is the archetypal spoiled teenager. One of Joshu's most prominent traits is his general unpleasantness. He is rude and disrespectful to not only his regular entourage but also most people he interacts with. In general, Joshu is quite vulgar and regularly insults or disparages those he interacts with. Partly out of resentment, Joshu regularly bad-mouths Josuke and has at one point mocked him for not having a family. He also has a habit of bantering and playing pranks on his sister Hato. When Hato reveals her unattractive boyfriend, Tamaki Damo to her family, he immediately chuckles at the sight of Damo and also consistently acts rude to his guest. Finally, when Kaato Higashikata revealed herself to her family, Joshu was hostile to her and made it a point to humiliate her by disassembling her clothes (though this was notably in retaliation to her forced entry and insults of his hair). Yasuho notes that Joshu has poor social skills, which is at odds with his educational pursuit of social studies. Hato is a tall, beautiful young woman with straight shoulder-length hair grouped into strands held together in arrow shaped accessories. Hato wears a bodysuit with a laced collar and a spiraling arrow that leads down her chest and points towards her groin. She constantly wears high-heeled shoes that serve as her primary weapons when coupled with her Stand's ability. Hato is also proud of her beauty and is shown to be serious about her work. In preparation for a collaboration with the famous ice-skater Shizuka Arakawa, she is shown taking great care in appearing proper but also worries that she could overshadow Arakawa with her beauty. For her age, Hato is still very playful and jolly, to the point she could appear childish. For instance, she entertains a playful sibling rivalry with younger brother Joshu, with the two of them insulting each other in good-spirited ways or playing pranks. Hato occasionally elongates certain syllables, much like her mother. Mitsuba is a woman of average to slim build. She has short, medium-colored hair with sideswept bangs curled upward. Her outfit consists of a shirt with two cutouts on her upper chest and a checkered skirt. She also wears a pair of heels. In her later appearance, her bangs are no longer curled upward and her hair is longer on the sides, now covering her ears to hide her skin hardening to stone. She wears a short sleeve top with knots on the shoulders, shorts, wristbands, a long transparent dress, and a pair of high heels. Her shirt is adorned with a downward arrow symbol, whereas her wristbands have symbols with arrows pointing both upward and downward. She is the wife of Jobin Higashikata and the mother of Tsurugi Higashikata. Mitsuba is a Stand user, and possesses the Stand Awaking III Leaves. Mitsuba is a vain woman, caring a lot about her appearance and wanting to look perfect. It is revealed that she has repeatedly visited Dr. Wu Tomoki to have various operations to maintain her good looks (for instance having a breast enlargement operation), paying large sums of money behind Jobin's back. She also demonstrates some petty selfishness, as she closes the door of an elevator before an old woman with crutches can enter just so she can have it to herself, as well as using her Stand to make Maako and others of the parent council spill their drinks over themselves. However, it is also shown that she cares deeply for her children, willingly eating a Locacaca to save her unborn child even if there was a risk of her dying. For the sake of her child, she also proves herself to be a fierce and resourceful fighter, brutally stomping Wu Tomoki when he gets in her way. Toru appears to be a slim man on the shorter side, being just slightly taller than Yasuho. He has curly hair styled in a very round afro on his head, which gradually changes from a smaller, looser curly afro to a larger, more solid looking elliptical one in later appearances. The afro features two swirls on either side. In later depictions, these swirls are two ends of the same line, rather than being separate. He wears a dark vest over a sweatshirt, which has long sleeves patterned with triplets of thick black lines intersecting each other. On the right breast of the vest, there's a symbol for the letter "S" with a sun pattern surrounding it. A similar yet smaller "S" can be located on the crotch area of his pants, although this "S" is missing in later depictions. On either shoulder of his sweatshirt are two bright teddy bears. His pants have a floral pattern on them, showing what appear to be grape vines and leaves. Toru is a callous and mysterious individual who directs the Locacaca Organization from the shadows. He uses a friendly charade as a means to disguise himself and drive away suspicion. As a Rock Human, Toru has grown to develop antisocial tendencies due to his solitary upbringing. While he's able to conduct himself in a casual, upbeat manner, Toru's true personality has an incredible sense of ruthlessness to it. This is best demonstrated by his Stand ability, as well as his general apathy towards the suffering and grievance of those around him. Toru is ambitious and knowledgeable in technology and medicine; however, he's frustrated by his youthful appearance, which he feels is a roadblock to achieving his full potential. He uses the stolen identity of Satoru Akefu to maintain influence and power as the director of the TG University Hospital and his own covert organization of Rock Humans. His main project is the cultivation of the Locacaca to create revolutionary medicine and secure global influence, up-ending the balance of society and placing his species at the top. Toru also muses about the riches and the power he could secure by exploiting the new fruit's Equivalent Exchange.
