In the year 2038, the world was struck by a previously unknown panic: Hartmann Neuroevolutionary Syndrome — or simply HNS-38. The pathogen responsible, derived from an experimental strain of neural virus modified in a laboratory, was originally intended to accelerate the regeneration of brain tissue in patients with degenerative diseases. The highly confidential project was developed by an international biotechnology consortium, but a containment accident in an underground laboratory of the Nova Helix Corporation in Alaska exposed the world to a catastrophe.

HNS-38 spread like wildfire. Transmitted by air, silent in the early days, its symptoms ranged from intense convulsions to deep coma. Within months, 40% of the global population was infected. Governments collapsed. Entire cities were evacuated or placed under military quarantine. There was fear, chaos… and silence in the news, after the communication networks went down.

But then, as inexplicably as it had appeared, the disease simply disappeared.

Those infected woke up, days or weeks later, with neurological changes never recorded before. Now with abilities that defied physics, biology — and the world order.

Nations reorganized themselves. Laws emerged to regulate the “evolved,” now known as the Awakened. While many became heroes, saving lives and rebuilding what was lost, others used their gifts to conquer, destroy, or dominate. Thus began the Rebirth Era, where the everyday mixed with the extraordinary, and humanity’s greatest challenge became living with its own monsters and miracles.

How do these powers work?

The abilities of the Awakened are encoded directly in their DNA, activated by the action of HNS-38, which rewrote latent regions of the human genome. These regions began to express a new protein, called VIREN (Viral Induced Regenerative Enhancer), responsible for sustaining and stabilizing the extraordinary manifestations in the organism.

VIREN acts as a bioenergetic conductor, connecting neurological impulses to expanded functions of the body — whether to generate extreme heat, manipulate magnetic fields or regenerate tissues in real time. Each power is linked to a unique genetic signature, which makes individual abilities biologically exclusive, although hereditary.

Children of Awakened can be born with identical abilities, enhanced variants or even unpredictable combinations, depending on genetic compatibility and the expression of VIREN.

Heroes:

In the wake of the HNS-38 outbreak, many Awakened have chosen to use their gifts to protect, rebuild, and inspire. These individuals—popularly known as Watchers or Protectors—have formed leagues, civic groups, and even specialized government forces. They act as bridges between the old world and the new, dealing with threats that traditional law cannot contain. Some are trained, others self-taught, but all share a common ideal: to ensure that power does not replace justice. Despite their public adoration, these heroes live under constant surveillance, regulated by laws that require genetic registration, monitoring of their actions, and adherence to strict ethical codes. In a fragile world, they are both beacons and targets.

Villains:

But not everyone accepted the new order. Many Awakened saw their powers as a way to free themselves—from the system, from morality, or from humanity itself. Driven by trauma, ambition, ideology, or pure instinct for domination, these individuals formed factions, cartels, and insurgent movements. They are called Deviants, although some prefer the term “free.” They use their abilities to dominate territories, overthrow governments, or create new power dynamics. While the heroes represent hope, the villains embody the fear of what genetic evolution can bring about without control.

Neutrals:

Between the extremes, there are those who simply refuse to choose sides. Living on the fringes of society, neutrals keep their abilities secret or use them solely for survival. Some fear persecution, while others distrust both heroes and villains. They are mercenaries, healers, hermits, scientists — and some of the most powerful Awakened known.

Classifications

In Epoch: Rebirth, each Awakened receives a category based on the level, complexity, and impact of their powers as soon as they are cataloged in the Ember Authority's database.

The E.A. is an international force created after the Rebirth Era to register, monitor, and classify all Awakened — whether heroes, villains, or neutral individuals.
