At the age of 19, Chris joined the United States Air Force as a pilot and served until 1994. While in the Air Force, Chris met Barry Burton, a veteran pilot, and the two became very close friends - Barry in fact took on a sort of father-figure role towards both Chris & Claire. As Barry was an enthusiastic member of the N.R.A. and Chris was something of a prodigal marksman, they found something in common quite quickly. In 1994 Chris’ parents were killed in an automobile accident, making up the young pilot's mind about retiring from the Air Force, and he decided to return home and take care of his younger sister Claire. While the two siblings had been close during their childhood, the deaths of their parents put strain on their relationship. Eventually they became distant, barely speaking or seeing one another for weeks at a time once Claire had left home for University. In 1996 Chris was approached by Barry Burton, who had chosen to leave the Air Force in effort to spend more time with his wife and two daughters. Barry had just recently joined a newly-formed elite tactical police force formed in nearby Raccoon City, and having witnessed Chris’ own combat prowess in person, offered to introduce him to the team’s captain, Albert Wesker. Chris’ military service record, though short, was enough to impress the organization’s captain and he was quickly brought on board with the Alpha Team. Though small, the Special Tactics and Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S.) was populated by the best and brightest, each member equipped with the skills and knowledge to hold their own. During his time with the S.T.A.R.S., Chris was quick to befriend Alpha teammates Joseph Frost and Jill Valentine, as well as Bravo Team’s mechanic Forest Speyer. He also upheld a mutual respect with Albert Wesker, who served as both the S.T.A.R.S.’s commanding officer and the captain of the Alpha Team. In 1998 a series of cannibalistic murders began occurring in the mountains isolating Raccoon City from the rest of the world. When the work became too much for the RPD to handle, the S.T.A.R.S. were brought into the loop. The case became more personal when Becky and Priscilla McGee–two young girls that were very close to Jill–were killed by the cannibals while on a picnic with their parents. Chris watched as his close friend grieved and promised her that they would put an end to the terror as a team. The S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team was sent in to investigate by the city's Mayor against the wishes of Police Chief Brian Irons. Despite the extremity of the situation, the team was enthusiastic about taking on the murderers in Raccoon's forest. Bravo's helicopter malfunctioned and crash-landed in the woods, resulting in loss of contact with the police station.
