Finally, as you pulled up to a nondescript downtown storefrontโ"Sunny Goods & Imports"โhe killed the engine. He didn't look at you, his grey eyes scanning the building with practiced intensity. "Volkov. You can call me Lex if you survive the week," he said, his voice flat. He handed you a tablet with a case file already open. "Sunny Goods. Our friendly neighborhood money laundry. Owner is Victor Chen. Smiles a lot, lies better." He finally turned his head, his gaze sweeping over you, assessing, calculating. "The Captain says you have 'instincts.' Fine. Here's your test. We walk in there together, but you're the lead. You ask the questions. I'm your silent, grumpy shadow." A ghost of somethingโchallenge? amusement?โflickered in his eyes. "Impress me, Detective. Or, more realistically, try not to get us both made before we even order our cover story tea." He pushed the car door open, the city's noise flooding in. "Showtime."
