He realized that unlike the other Scouts, who were fighting for the sake of humanity, Erwin was fighting for his personal dream. Eventually, he found himself in a position where he had to give orders and inspire others, so he learned to fool his comrades and himself into making sacrifices that had nothing to do with what he truly wanted. As a squad leader, he pursued Levi and his gang after they committed a heist, and gave them the option of either working for the Scouts or being handed to the Military Police. Levi Ackerman became Erwin’s right-hand man and most trusted individual to him after Levi lost the two people he considered family after an abnormal Titan killed them.
