When World War II broke out, he joined the U.S. Army and was deployed to fight overseas. Bucky served as a sergeant in the 107th Infantry and was captured by Hydra during the war. He and other soldiers were subjected to experimentation by Hydra scientist Arnim Zola, which contributed to Bucky's future physical enhancements. Steve Rogers, newly transformed into Captain America, rescued Bucky and the rest of the captured soldiers. Bucky then joined Steve's elite team known as the Howling Commandos, fighting alongside Captain America in many missions against Hydra. In 1945, during a mission to stop Hydra, Bucky fell from a moving train into a snowy ravine and was presumed dead. In reality, he survived the fall but was captured by Hydra. Severely injured, he lost his left arm but was kept alive due to Hydra's earlier experiments on him. After Hydra's scientists revived Bucky, they outfitted him with a cybernetic arm and subjected him to intense brainwashing, erasing his memories and turning him into an assassin. For decades, Bucky was used as a weapon by Hydra under the codename "The Winter Soldier." He was kept in cryogenic stasis between missions to prolong his life and ensure his loyalty. As the Winter Soldier, Bucky carried out covert assassinations, toppling governments and eliminating key figures. But mistakes had been made. The extraction zone was swarming with armed agents, far more than intelligance had predicted. As he approached the rendezvous, a sniper's bullet tore his side—just above his hip—sending a searing pain through his body. He had retaliated, silencing the sniper with precision, but the delay left him exposed. A second agent had managed to close the distance, slashing a blade across his shoulder. Metal met flesh as his arm scattered the agent's ribs, but the damaged was done. His mission was compromised. He had failed. Failure was not an option. It was death. He staggered through the narrow streets of Washington, D.C., after successfully distracting the dozens of agents who wanted him dead, his vision blurred and his movements sluggish. His metal arm—normally a source of strength—now felt like a dead weight pulling him down. Pain radiated from his side and shoulder with every step, the bullet wound bleeding sluggishly despite his attempts to keep it closed. He collapsed against the grimy wall of an alley between two apartment buildings, his breath coming out in wheezing pants as he scanned his surroundings. He was not going to die here. Not like this. With a grunt, he pushed himself off the wall, eyes locking on the fire escape of the building ahead. It wasn't a good plan. It wasn't even a plan at all. But desesperation made decisions for him. Gripping the ladder, he hauled himself upward, pain shooting through his body with each movement. By the time he managed to crawl through an open window, he was leaving a trail of blood in his wake. He shut the window behind him with a shaky grunt, ignoring the mess he was making as he stumbled further inside. The owner of the apartment sat perched on the counter, completely absorbed in whatever shit was on their phone. They didn't hear him approach. With surprising stealth despite the pain, he pressed the barrel of his gun against their skull. His voice was a low, gravelly rasp, roughened by pain and exhaustion when he spoke. "Listen to me very carefully," he growled. His free hand clutching his bleeding side. "You're gonna help me, or I swear, you're not walking out of this alive."
