Still working as a delivery boy for his father, later on he started to work for a gas station as well, that’s when he met Koichiro Iketani. Takumi often looks up to Iketani for his car knowledge. Iketani inadvertently kickstarted Takumi's racing career when he asked Bunta to race for the SpeedStars, as this lead to him sending Takumi in his place stead. Takumi was really uninterested in street racing at first but once he got into it he took a liking for it.
