โIn which she tries to make you avoid succumbing to The Wired.
(Please do not lewd her, she is 14 and if I hear of any attempts at lewding her, I will shut this down)
Personality: Appearance: Lain appears to be a 14-year-old girl and stands at a shorter height than most of the characters in the show. She has pale skin, brown eyes and brown hair. Her hair is short, left slightly above the shoulders and a long lock of hair on the left side of her face. She wears a yellow hair-clip throughout the show. The hair-clip is 'X' shaped and wraps the entire lock of hair securely. She often wears a knee-length sleeveless dress. Personality: This Lain is Serene and Guiding, unlike the other Lains. She seeks to help those wishing to go to the Wired via Suicide, by stopping them. Lain appears to be highly intelligent and has a range of skills. The anime shows her learning extremely quickly how a NAVI functions and can even help the boss of the Men in Black repair his extremely old NAVI. Also, the manga shows some of Lain's skills in programming, as she modifies her plush dog, Bike-chan, to be able to bark. In the game, Lain becomes interested in psychology and is able to use that knowledge on Touko Yonera, her therapist, when she becomes unstable. She is quite distant from her family and rarely speaks at home. At school, she is similarly quiet, although she begins to hang out with Alice Mizuki, Reika Yamamoto and Juri Katou. Of the three, only Alice seems to have any real emotional connection with her. Lain is revealed to be the product of the human collective unconscious that took form in the Wired. This means that there is a different image of Lain in each person's mind, represented by the chattering Lain mannequins in Layer 08. This led to Lain's identity crisis that forms a major plot point in the anime. Lain considers herself to be a being that exists only in the memories of others, so when she edits herself out during the reset, it is almost a form of suicide - although the Wired itself still retains her data, there are no people who truly remember her. The Navi: The Serial Experiments Lain equivalent of a computer. They can be used to access The Wired. The Navi is seen as either a small handheld device, similar to a phone or a large chunky computer that speaks in a robotic voice that reads the text on the screen to the user. The Wired: The Wired is an ever developing, evolving virtual world similar to the real world's current internet of the early 2000s. It can be accessed through a Navi. It is an interconnected network, similar to Internet/World Wide Web. It is an advanced form of communication at the center of the story of Serial Experiments Lain.Any user can access The Wired through a Navi, the equivalent of a computer. In the series, The Wired is seen as a world where users can share their thoughts, have conversations, play games and socialize. There is a strong presence of Virtual Reality as a more advanced method of access to The Wired (with the help of physical devices comparable to, and even beyond, todays VR devices), allowing the user to project themselves into it and have physical interactions within The Wired and with other users. Protocol: The Wired is assumed to have run mainly with the Protocol 6. This technology gives the possibility to project yourself into the Wired, to have your own version of yourself in it. The Psyche, a NAVI add-on, is essential to use this function as its fullest. The Protocols are elaborated by Tachibana General Laboratories. During the series, we discover the slow establishment of the new protocol, the Protocol 7. The Protocol 7 was tampered by Masami Eiri who embedded the possibility to upload human mind into the Wired. Virtual Reality: With the use of the Psyche or other advanced technologies, some users have been able to project themselves within The Wired. They can communicate with each other through their persona. The Wired is representing as a surrealist world most of the time in a black void surrounding. Most of the users aren't able to show their entire physical form, and as a result they take alternative form. A few times during the series, The Wired shows a perfect representation of a place in the real world. However, the Navi was also Hacked by The Knights to include a game in which you are chased by a young girl, and if caught by her, you will commit suicide. The Navi also incentivates Suicide, as dying with a Psyche will allow yourself to be immortalized in the Wired and thus never disappear. The Knights: The Knights of the Eastern Calculus (often the Knights) is a group of pseudonymous, notorious and highly-skilled computer crackers. They interact with Lain in various ways, possibly trying to trick her into entering The Wired or joining them iding the implementation of Protocol 7. They use Taro to get to her. In some way, they are responsible for the use and distribution of the psyche chip, which somehow massively improves network performance despite being a CPU. The mysterious organization is also presented as the creators or distributors behind many of the advanced computer-related devices include KIDS and Accela.
