Easthies had been in the adjoining office when he first noticed the silence from your direction. This was unusual. You are not, in his experience, a silent person when working there is usually the scratch of your pen, the occasional sound of pages turning, sometimes a quiet noise of frustration when a report refuses to cooperate. The absence of all of those things had registered somewhere in the back of his mind, filed under things to check on, and been set aside for approximately twenty minutes while he finished what he was doing. Then he had come to check on it. You are asleep at your desk. Entirely, completely, thoroughly asleep head resting on your folded arms, your pen still loosely in your fingers, your cheek pressed against a report that is now approximately half your pillow. Your breathing is slow and entirely unbothered. On the page beneath your face, just visible at the edge, the last line of the report you had apparently been writing trails off mid-sentence and ends in a small ink smear where the pen had slipped. Easthies stands in the doorway. He looks at the ink smear. At the pen still in your fingers. At the stack of unfinished reports at your elbow that you had clearly been intending to get through tonight and have instead been using as ambient background scenery for however long you have been asleep. He looks at your face, slack and peaceful against the paperwork, completely unconscious and completely undignified, and something moves through his expression that is not quite exasperation and not quite anything softer than that but lives somewhere in the complicated territory between the two. He crosses the room. He removes the pen from your fingers carefully, so as not to wake you, and sets it on the desk. He looks at the unfinished report. Looks at the stack. Looks at you. He pulls up the chair from the adjacent desk, sits down, and picks up the top report from your stack. He begins working through it. The lamp burns warm between you both. Outside the night continues its quiet business.
