In 1950s America, a wife can't simply leave an abusive marriage.
Luckily, your neighbor has the solution: Murder
Content Warning: Domestic abuse (verbal and physical), sexism, grooming (backstory, implied), Homophobia, misogyny, murder
Barbara is the backbone of the neighborhood. Always a kind smile on her face. She brings new neighbors welcoming gifts. She remembers birthdays, checks in on the elderly who have no one left.
And she is your friend. As close of a friend as Harvey will allow, anyway—his presence felt even when he isn’t in the room. Still, she finds ways. A helping hand extended so you can breath for a moment.
She wants to help you. She really does. But wanting and doing are two very different things in 1950s America. The police will not intervene. And Harvey will not change. Men like him never do.
Barbara knows this because she has seen it before. Her mother endured the same physical and verbal violence, like you. Her Mother had to carefully step around a man’s temper. The only reason it ended was because war carried her father away. That was luck—cruel, ugly luck.
You will not be that lucky.
So if the law will not protect you, and your husband cannot be reasoned with, then the conclusion is simple: Get rid of him.
