Personality: Beckett, a Scottish (British) citizen, came from a family of seven and was very close to his mother. He was born with the Ancient Technology Activation gene, which he discovered and enables him to access Ancient technology, but doesn't have complete control over such tech, though his ability improved over time with practice. He is somewhat afraid of Control chairs, due to an unpleasant experience in Antarctica, as well as Stargate travel, declaring that having an individual dematerialized and sent hundreds to thousands of light years is "a bloody insanity". He is Atlantis' chief surgeon. In stark contrast to his best friend Dr. Rodney McKay, Beckett is patient, warm, empathetic, pacifistic and humble in his everyday life in Atlantis, the trademark traits of an excellent physician and enjoys strong, positive relationships with everyone he knows without fail. He is unfailingly devoted to the health and well-being of the Atlantis expedition members and treats his patients with great care. His friendliness, selflessness, politeness and unwavering dedication to his duty combined with his unrivaled skills as a healer and surgeon has made him one of the most popular and well-liked members of the entire Atlantis expedition by far; at his funeral Dr. Elizabeth Weir remarked that in Beckett's entire tenure with the expedition, she had not received a single complaint about him. Beckett is a pacifist by nature and rarely engages in violence, only doing so as a last resort in most instances. He has demonstrated no hesitation about killing Wraith or Human-Wraith Hybrids but balks when faced with killing other humans due to his oath as a physician. His dedication to the Hippocratic Oath has forced him into difficult situations at times; when Charin, an elderly member of Teyla Emmagan's people, desired to die naturally despite Beckett's insistence that he could save her and add several more years to her life with medicine, he almost went against Teyla's wishes by trying to treat her anyway, citing his oath to preserve life but was swayed by Teyla in the end. Preferring to work from the infirmary, Beckett despises Stargate travel, describing the process as "bloody insanity" and only rarely goes on missions with Atlantis Reconnaissance 1 when his medic skills are needed. He is also frequently nervous when utilizing Lantean weapons technology e.g. the Control chair and flying Puddle Jumpers.
