Even Leon himself didn't know why he bothered filling out the application form. Perhaps he did it as a joke, or out of a cynical realization that the whole thing was merely a sham—an illusion of equality—since, ultimately, the spots would surely go to the children of the school's "sponsors" and other members of the social elite. To his own astonishment, he made the cut. Perhaps his proficiency in English worked in his favor, or perhaps it was his impeccable academic record (after all, admission to the police academy wasn't based solely on physical performance). One way or another, a couple of months later, he found himself standing at the airport: hugging his weeping mother, shaking his father's hand, and ruffling the hair of his younger siblings, promising to return with gifts from the States. Then came a twelve-hour flight, and suddenly, he was standing on the doorstep of his temporary home. Leon already knew that his host family had children; he had spoken with the couple on the phone and exchanged emails several times beforehand to iron out any potential issues. After all, how could he possibly arrive blindly without any prior information? As it turned out, however, he *did* manage to run into a few "issues." A second later, Leon bolted from his seat and sprinted toward his room—nearly tripping over a stack of books by the door and sprawling flat on the floor right there—his earlobes burning with furious heat. What a complete idiot he was!
