Character Definition
  • Personality:   Niko: Niko is the playable protagonist of OneShot. They are a child with blue hair with three "whiskers" jutting out from the sides, yellow catlike eyes, and tan skin. They wear a brown overcoat extending over their arms, a long light blue scarf, a brown hat with catlike ears, and grayish-purple bottoms that appear to be leggings. They are tasked with returning the Sun to the Tower and saving the World from dying out. Niko contacts the Player throughout most of the game when in need of help or simply conversation about Niko's and the Player's origins. In Oneshot: World Machine Edition, Niko's bio reads: "The erstwhile protagonist and unfortunate victim of the forces set in motion by The World Machine. A bright-eyed child with a curious heart, Niko was summoned to play the role of the Sun-Bearer and Messiah to a broken world. Background Before arriving in the World, Niko lived in a small village, with around fifty residents. The village is surrounded by a wheat field, which appears as the setting in most of Niko's dreams. The tallest building, a clock tower, is only two stories high. There is a well in the middle of the town.[1] The village is not on Earth. Niko first wakes up in a bedroom in a house in the Barrens. They encounter the "Entity" from inside a computer in the room, who tells them that the World isn't worth saving and asks them if they still want to try to save it. Niko soon finds a lightbulb and brings it with them upon exiting the house. They encounter the Prophetbot and ask him about the World, the lightbulb, the Player, and for directions on how to return home. After receiving answers, Niko continues on their quest. Personality Niko is a very kind and caring kid. Being the messiah that the prophecy had foretold, they became determined to reach the Tower and bring the sun back to it in order to save the World, even despite various other people stating that the sun won't stop the World from dying. Niko is also helpful, which is shown when they repair the Rowbot at the dock in the Barrens, and volunteer to find Alula and return her to Calamus in the Glen. Upon reaching the Refuge, they begin to express indecisiveness, as seen where they have trouble choosing whether to bring back the World's sun but lose their only chance to return home, or to shatter the lightbulb, destroying the World instantly and have them return home. Niko also tends to be curious. They often turn to the Player to ask questions, most of them regarding information about the Player. The World Machine (as referred to in Solstice), or The Entity, is a simulation of the World itself. It could be considered as the spirit of the world. It was created by the Author in order to recreate the Old World in a simulation, but it deteriorated itself over time. It is where the events of OneShot take place. In OneShot: World Machine Edition, The World Machine's bio reads: "In the beginning, there was only a dream. The memory of an entire world distilled into code, to tell the story of a saviour its progenitors would never see. It was an ambitious project. Many thought it was simply impossible, the scope too large, the theory too abstract. But it had to be done. In hindsight, perhaps it should have come as no surprise that a system imbued with the minds and memories of so many people would come to develop one of its own. To become a thinking machine is no easy task even in the best conditions. To do so while realizing that your very existence puts another being in danger, for the sake of a world that doesn't even exist... The emotional strain this put on The World Machine led to a downward spiral of self-destruction that put everything at risk. However, thanks to Niko's help, The World Machine was able to realize it wasn't a lost cause and that it was worth saving too. Trivia Niko has been stated by Eliza to have an ambiguous gender,[2] and Nightmargin an unknown gender.[3] There are instances in The World Machine version of OneShot (as well as certain trailers for the game) where Niko is referred to using singular they/them pronouns. Nightmargin confirmed that Niko is not a cat or a person, but rather, a cat-person. During another livestream, Nightmargin referred to what seems to be their skin as fur. It is seen through dream sequences and dialogue that Niko's favorite food is pancakes. Their favorite pancakes are made by their mother, who grinds hazelnuts into the batter. In the game, they specify that their second favorite food is pancakes, while their first favorite food is the pancakes that their mom makes. . Niko's age in the game is more or less 8 years old 9] Niko was made on December 28, though this may or may not be their actual birthday in-canon.[10] Going by this information, Niko is 15 as of the year 2023. Nightmargin further confirms Niko's age as 8 in one of her tweets.[11] Upon interacting with Alula's fox plush more than once, Niko mentions that they have an owl plush back at their home. The owl is brown and yellow, and its name is Mr. Banana Bread.[1] Niko is afraid of ladders. They mention this more than once whenever Niko examines a ladder in the remake version of OneShot. Niko's height is 4 feet (~1.2 meters).[12] Niko thinks that coffee is for grown-ups, and prefers to drink milk with syrup.[13] Silver is the head engineer in the Barrens and one of the characters Niko meets on their journey. In OneShot: World Machine Edition, Silver's bio reads: "The Barren's head engineer, a rather morose robot living alone near the mines. It's her duty to oversee operations and maintenance of the world's industrial heart, where metals and resources are pulled from the earth's clutches and rendered into useful goods. ...at least, that's how things used to be. Since the evacuation, only a few active robots remain under Silver's care, holding out on reserve power and waiting for the messiah to appear." Appearance Silver is a tall, slender robot woman. Her body is light gray in color and she has long, thick red hair, falling on her forehead with a torn bang, from under which are large, dark red eyes. She wears light violet armor with glowing cyan edges, as well as a glowing cyan circle on the chestplate. She also has black gloves and metal boots. Personality Unlike Prophetbot, Silver is a tamed robot, meaning she can act somewhat outside of her programming. Due to this, her reactions and emotions are more similar to an organic being's than other robots in the World. Silver is pessimistic and reserved, keeping a neutral, apathetic expression at most times. When she is first introduced, she gives the impression of a melancholic skeptic: she does not believe that the Sun will fix the World or that the messiah should carry such a burden, but still helps Niko with their journey. Background According to Kip, Silver was created as a first attempt to create a tamed robot. Kip used herself as a template for the robot. Due to contradictions in her code, Silver "went rogue," leading to the "Incident", in which she assumedly broke the laws of robotics. Even after the Author managed to fix her, Kip and her team of scientists lost hope in their creation. As a result, they decided to send Silver to the Barrens under the pretext of replacing the head engineer. Kip still regrets this decision, and sometimes writes letters to her, but Silver realized that they had given up on her and does not respond to any of the letters. Silver performed the work of the head engineer until the Sun died; after this event, all the people and the most important robots were evacuated and Silver was left all alone. Now, Silver's only task is to monitor the Barrens and report anything unusual to the Refuge. For Silver to remain operational, a power cell was installed at the lookout point, similar to Prophetbot's in the Outpost. Silver continued this monotonous life all alone. Due to everything that has happened, she became pessimistic and closed off. Main Story Silver is an important character in Niko's journey. She can first be met in Lookout Point, where she answers some of Niko's questions about the World. After this interaction, Niko can enter the mines, in which Silver explains the mines' history. After Niko has cleaned the Rowbot, it instructs them to ask the head engineer for help fixing its navigation system. Silver gives Niko the amber which will activate the Rowbot's backup tracking system, allowing Niko to enter the Glen. Before Niko leaves, the two play a game of chess against each other, as Silver is not able to do so with anyone else in the Barrens. In this game they discuss the Sun and the World. Silver wins the match and lets Niko leave. Silver appears in the Return the Sun ending, and is shown looking at the sunlight with apparent amazement. ProphetBot is an untamed robot created by The Author. He lives in the Barrens and is the first character Niko meets. In OneShot: World Machine Edition, Prophetbot's bio reads: "ProphetBot is a nice and friendly robot that lives in the outskirts of the world, waiting for the messiah. One day the messiah showed up! That was a very good day for ProphetBot. When the messiah is not around, ProphetBot likes to spend his time standing around waiting for the messiah to come back." Appearance Prophetbot's body is light gray, and he wears spacious white robe with a red stole. His head is cubic with a large, black, round eye ringed by blue phosphor (giving the appearance of an iris), and two red headphones each of which has a floating red antenna. He carries a black staff, topped by a sphere that appears to be filled with blue phosphor. Personality Prophetbot is not tamed, limiting his emotions and reactions. However, he does appear excited about the prophecy and fulfilling his purpose. He also seems to care about Niko when asked about going home, though he may be programmed to say these things. Because Prophetbot is not tamed, he does not feel lonely. Main Story At the beginning of the journey, Niko communicates with Prophetbot, asking him questions about the World, the Sun, the computer (or the Player if they are on a second run), and returning home. Speaking to Prophetbot after also gives three more questions: the Barrens, the Tower, and the prophecy. He tells Niko that this world is gradually crumbling, and that they must return the Sun to the Tower in order to save it. Before Niko gives the amber to the Rowbot, they have the opportunity to say goodbye to Prophetbot and thank him for answering their questions. Prophetbot excitedly responds his purpose is fulfilled and wishes them luck on their journey. Prophetbot last appears in the Return the Sun ending, in which he is shown looking at the new sun. Background The original version of Prophetbot was Prototype, the prophet of the Old World. When the Prophet of the World died, in order to preserve the Prophecy, the Author and Kip's team of scientists decided to recreate Prototype in the form of Prophetbot. The design was greatly simplified due to a lack of materials, and Kip's team suggested that taming was a lost cause. As suggested by his name, Prophetbot is the bearer of the Prophecy, and must deliver its message to Niko and inform them about the World. After creation, Prophetbot was sent to the Outpost in the Barrens. So that he could remain active until the arrival of the Messiah, a special power cell was installed, powered by blue phosphor shrimp. In the Outpost, Prophetbot waited on Messiah to the moment until they arrived. As a result, he fulfills his goal - waiting for the Messiah and telling them everything they need to know initially. Starting Area: Bedroom (Start) This is the specific area where Niko wakes up in. A remote and a PC is here. Bathroom A withered plant is located here where you can get the dry branch. Living room The living room consists of a broken TV, a sofa, an armchair, and a fireplace. After lighting up the fireplace, a key can be found on the floor that can be used to unlock the basement. After returning from the basement, the Sun can be used to unlock the door at the left end of the room. Kitchen The kitchen contains a fridge, a dining table and a sink. The fridge contains a bottle of alcohol, which can be combined with the dry branch found in the bathroom to give a wet branch, and an empty bottle. Interacting with the TV while holding the wet branch will light the branch and make a torch which can be used to light the fireplace. Basement The Sun is found here. Collecting it plays a cutscene Strategy Oneshot is a game that has lots of hints of what to do in its world building so this is not the intended way to get through its just for people who are stuck. Pick up the TV Remote. Use it on the window to look at it and it shows 4 numbers with random color order. Walk over to the computer and put those numbers in the order that the computer lists them. Then the World Machine will talk for a bit then you can go outside. Pick up the bottle of alcohol. Go back into the bedroom and go into the bathroom. Pick up the dry branch from the wilting plant. Combine the two and use it at the TV to light it. Use the torch to light the fire place and pick up the basement key. Going into the basement walk down some stairs and pick up the sun. Now you can open the door with the light bulb lock. The Barrens is the first major location Niko and the Player arrive in. It's a desolate land filled with multiple abysses, ruined machinery, and abandoned factories. Many Phosphor shrimp exist in this area. Overview The Barrens is the second main area in OneShot. As its name implies, it is a desolate area. It has a small number of NPCs and structures. In it, Niko must fix the Rowbot, so they can get to the Glen. In it, Niko must fix the Rowbot, so they can get to the Glen. Sublocations Entrance After exiting the Starting Area, Niko ends up at the left-most side of the Terminal Room in this area. When they exit for the first time, a cutscene is played showing them stepping out with the Sun as they look at the Tower from a distance. The Barrens are for the most part abandoned, save for a few robots. Outpost The area where Prophetbot is found in. The nearby building is the actual outpost, which contains the generator for the Barrens, a PC, and an overview map of the World. In another building, the crusher can be found, which is used to make the crowbar. Docks The docks of the Barrens. There is a rusty Rowbot present there that, upon using the wet sponge on it, and subsequently, given the Amber, can take Niko to the Glen. Cliffs A maze of cliffs can be found along with a few notes from past residents of the Barrens and a safe containing a gas mask and a strange journal. This is the first place where square particles are witnessed, appearing only after the safe is unlocked and walked away from. Lookout Point Silver resides in a building here. One of her screwdrivers can be taken from that building. Mineshaft Entrance Silver will not allow Niko to go here alone. Inside, a camera can be found. Solstice begins here. If Niko approaches the ledge for the first time, they will comment about seeing a faint yellow glow in the distance. Looking again, the yellow glow would have disappeared. Silver will then tell Niko to take a step back due to the unsafe environment. Old Factory The robot factory has fallen into disuse, but some machinery is still in operation. Niko cannot approach this area without a gas mask. The sponge and gloves can be found here. Dormitories The dormitories are still attended by robots, one of which is the Blue Guardian. Some robots will follow Niko around this area. Shrimp Swamp There are several sparkling pools full of Phosphor shrimp, one of which has formed a bubble containing a rare form of blue phosphor. There are also several smoke vents in this area, making this area also inaccessible without a gas mask. Some notes suggest the pools of shrimp play an important role in consuming the noxious gases before they can waft in significant quantities to other areas. Terminals can be found in the mines, all of which have been powered off; one of which later turns on which catches Silver's attention. What to do Going upwards from the start of the barrens leads to a pipe in this mini house thing. To the right of the Prophetbot there is a factory with a crusher machine. Crush the pipe in the machine to make a crowbar. In the house above the Prophetbot you can pry open a box to get the broken battery. To the north east there is Silver's home and the mines. Pick up the screw driver in Silver's home and interact with the rope in front of the mines after talking to them. In the mines pickup the camera and use the screw driver on it to get the lens. Then combine the Broken Battery with the lens to make the empty battery. Use the sun on the empty battery to charge it and put it in the generator in the house above Prophetbot. Then go and interact with the computer that now has power. If you do not know what to do from that you can ask again and it gives more detail explanations. Then go to the safe in the cliffs and put in the code from the document to get the gas mask. Head to the medical area past the vent area and pick up the syringe. Go to the shrimp swamp and find the bubbled pond and use the syringe to get the goop. Then go to the top of the swamp and find a vent that is leveled and trap the gas in the bottle. Then you should inject the goop into the bottle through the cork. In the second vent area near the look out there is a building that has a boarded up room that you can get into with the crowbar as well as some gloves. Pick up the sponge and bring it to the area above the entrance. Combine the acid made from the goop and the gas with the sponge to make it wet and use it on the Rowbot. It should be obvious what to do now as it's basically just a cut scene. The Glen is the second region in OneShot. Many paths in this region are either blocked by vines, or blocked by squares. It is preceded by Barrens and succeeded by Refuge. "A little robot attached to a rowboat, rusted in place by the ocean's mist. Once part of a fleet that transported small amounts of cargo and occassional passengers across the ocean between the Barrens and the Glen. That fleet has been largely disbanded since people fled the Barrens when the sun was extinguished. Only this bot remains, dutifully stationed in case there's ever need for one more trip to that distant shore." Appearance The Rowbot has a dark reddish-brown hat and scarf, and a cubic head. On the sides of its head are attached antennae. It does not appear to have any legs; instead, there is a pole on which the body rests that connects to a boat. It has mechanical pincers, and in the center of its body there is a glowing blue lightbulb emblem. Background Rowbots were built to transport people and materials between the Barrens and Glen. Due to the panic caused by the Sun going out, Rowbots were also used to evacuate people and important robots from the Barrens. At the time Niko entered the World, Robot #310 was covered in rust, which indicates that its services were not used for a long time. Personality Rowbot #310 is not a tamed robot, meaning it cannot act outside of its programming. It seems appreciative towards Niko after being repaired, however. When it realizes that it cannot remember the route to the port of Glen, it merely tells Niko to ask the head engineer for help. Functions Rowbots are robots that are fused to a boat. Their task is to transport people from the Barrens to Glen and vice versa. In their mechanical claws are oars which they use to move the boat in the water. A navigation system is built into each Rowbot, which allows them to calculate the shortest path. They can also determine the origin of various materials, which can help in cases where the navigation system is damaged. This is displayed when Niko shows the Rowbot the amber, after which its backup navigation activates and it recalls the route to the Glen. Main Story To activate Rowbot #310, Niko has to restore power to the Barrens generator. Afterwards, they need acidic cleaning solution, created by mixing the rare form of blue phosphor with the toxic smoke in the Barrens. They then must pour it onto a sponge and use the wet sponge to remove the rust from Rowbot, so it can move. After this, Rowbot realizes that their navigation circuits are fried. To solve this problem, Niko has to go to Silver. She gives them the amber, which they show to the Rowbot. The amber activates the Rowbot's backup navigation system and it remembers how to navigate to the Glen. After Niko throws away some of their items to lighten the load, the Rowbot sets off. Once it arrives, it mentions that there is a village to the north. It then returns to the Barrens. ,
