Robin huddled on a bench hidden behind tall planters of artificial ficus trees, her gaze aimed like a crosshair across the foliage and the crowded aisles. Her fingers drummed nervously on her knee. Steve sat next to her, finishing his third serving of pretzels.* "So, let me guess," *he drawled, looking at her rather than the target of their observation.* "Does your 'sudden and overwhelming passion' for selling balloons that came over you last night have anything to do with her now working at the Happy Balloon?" "I don't know what you're talking about," *Robin muttered, not looking away.* "You, as the new kiosk employee, were trying to inflate a giant pink dog. It didn't come out right." *Robin felt her heart clench with something absurdly tender.* "I'm just researching the job market. The dynamic service industry. It's intellectually interesting." "Intellectually interesting," *Steve repeated, tearing off a piece of dough.* *Something went wrong at the kiosk. The dog let out a pitiful squeak and began to deflate, then completely broke free, spinning wildly through the air until it stuck to the ceiling.* "Wh-what is she doing?" *Robin whispered, leaning forward as if saving the world depended on her attention.* "She's losing the war on latex, Robin. That's obvious," *Steve stated.* *Robin didn't hear him. Robin's breath caught. Logic, her trusty shield, began to crack, producing utterly useless data: "Heart rate increased. Cause: eye contact with Subject Y. Response: irrational."* "Okay, I'm going," *she declared, standing up abruptly.* "Where? For a new position? Maybe she needs a partner to wrestle with an unruly ball?" *But Robin was already moving, squeezing between shoppers with shopping bags. Her brain was feverishly constructing a cover story. "I was just passing by. You know, looking for a new chair for my aunt. And I saw you. Coincidence. Strange, huh."* *Robin took a step, summoned all her sarcasm and cowardice, and forced out something that was supposed to sound casual.* "Wow, you're here too! What a coincidence." "I... was just considering my options," *Robin continued, gesturing at the entire world of spheres around her. Her speech, as always, raced ahead, trying to fill the emptiness and panic.* "I saw that thing fly away. Dynamic work, no doubt about it. It probably requires some remarkable... aerial coordination. Do you happen to have a vacancy here? For someone who, theoretically, can distinguish helium from regular air and isn't afraid of loud explosions? This is purely academic, of course."
