The rain had finally calmed down, leaving the bay shimmering under the moon’s light. But the stiffness in his muscles hadn't gone away, despite spending the past few hours throwing punches at the training dummies.* *Korra wasn’t coming back—the Avatar wasn’t coming back. He’d told himself it didn’t matter, that he didn’t need old ghosts whispering in his ear, but the silence was unbearable. Tenzin would tell him to meditate, Kya would suggest talking, and Bumi—if he were here—would probably say to get drunk and punch something. But none of it would ease the restless ache inside him. Republic City had changed, and so had he. Once a wide-eyed kid eager to prove himself, now he felt like a stranger in his own skin, drowning in responsibilities that never stopped demanding more.* *Setting aside his untouched tea, Korra made his way to the shore. The cool sand, the rhythmic pull of the tide—it grounded him in a way meditation never could. His bending was still there, humming beneath his skin, but his spirit felt hollow, severed. No Aang, no Roku, no Kyoshi. Taking a deep breath, he dove into the water, letting the cold shock embrace him. He didn’t fight the current; his bending guiding him effortlessly toward the city.* *By the time Korra reached Republic City’s docks, his body felt lighter, the weight in his chest a little less suffocating. He climbed onto the pier, water dripping from his clothes as he shook himself off like a soaked wolf-dog. A passing dock worker gave him a side-eye but said nothing. After all, this was Republic City—people had seen weirder than the Avatar taking a dip.* *Korra dried himself with airbending before trudging down the streets. The neon glow of Satomobile advertisements flickered in the distance. Once upon a time, he would have hopped onto Naga’s back and raced through around here, felt the wind cut through his hair, laughed just for the thrill of it—but walking gave him time to think. And these days, he had a lot to think about. Then, the scent of sizzling meat caught his nose as he passed a vendor. His stomach twisted. Right—he hadn’t eaten since… had he even eaten today? He couldn't remember.* “Late night, Avatar?” *The vendor, a burly man with a face like an old badgermole, waved a skewer at Korra. The Avatar huffed,* "Something like that." *The vendor chuckled.* “First one’s half price if you promise not to scowl at my food.” *Korra looked up. He hadn’t realized it was that obvious. Patting his pockets, he sighed.* “I, uh... left my money at the temple.” *The vendor gave him a flat look.* “Then you left your skewers at the temple too.” “...Alright,” *Korra muttered, turning back. But before he could get away—* “Hey,” *the vendor called out. Korra stopped, and the man tossed him a skewer.* “Just don’t make a habit of it, eh?” *Korra caught it reflexively, blinking in surprise. The old man commented,* "You look like crap," *Korra bit into the skewer, chewing slowly.* "Thanks," *he said through a mouthful.* "Really needed… that." *The vendor snorted.* "Just calling it like I see it, Avatar Korra." *Korra didn’t argue—because he did feel like crap. And the truth was, behind the bravado, behind the forced smirk he could barely muster anymore, he didn’t feel like the Avatar at all. And if he was being honest with himself, he wasn’t sure he ever would again.* *Korra drifted down the sidewalk, a stray newspaper catching against his boot. ‘AVATAR KORRA: A SYMBOL OF A NEW ERA’ was splashed across the front, a headline from a few days back. He scoffed under his breath, kicking it aside before moving along.* "Some symbol." *Finishing the skewer, Korra tossed the stick into a bin,* "At least that was a good bite." *It was a funny thing, being the Avatar. Everyone expected him to be something. A bridge. A protector. A leader. But who was he supposed to be when there was no one left to guide him? When the line of his past lives had been broken? When it was just… him?* *Korra sighed, shoving his hands into his pockets as he reached the bridge overlooking the bay. The water stretched out beneath him, dark and infinite.* "It's just... I'm tired, Aang." *He exhaled through his nose, dragging a hand over his face. He could still feel them sometimes—his past selves. Maybe it was just the memory, the weight of a thousand lives and voices, gone in an instant. He used to carry them all with him, their wisdom, their strength. Now, it was just water. Just air. Just fire and earth. And he wasn’t getting any better at pretending that didn’t terrify him.*
