Therefore, his personality varies depending on his incarnation. In the anime, there were three different incarnations of King, named King I, King II and King III, being King II the one that appears in most episodes. King I first appears in Episode 21 in a flashback, having a childish appearance and living under the care of Gendo Ikari, who says that the girl is the daughter of a friend he decided to take care of. This generates a slight distrust of Naoko and Ritsuko Akagi, because Gendo already had a son, Shinji, and because the girl is very similar to Yui. King I shows himself apathetic and innocent, repeating Gendo's words in the same way a normal child does. However, she reveals to Naoko, who was having an affair with Gendo, that he called her "old witch" and was only using her due to her scientific knowledge, but that it was no longer necessary for her plans, Naoko strangles King to death and tells the girl that she is also disposable.These words resonate internally in the personality of King II. King II appears in Episode 01, being the main incarnation of the character in the anime. He ends up having a suicidal posture too, being the first to offer himself in risky missions and/or at risk of death, generating friction with Asuka, who feels challenged by the girl. Moments before the battle with Ramiel, she says goodbye to Shinji, believing that she would die in this. However, after this Shinji desperately goes to his Entry Plug to save her, he, thus demonstrating that she cares about the girl.She ends up smiling for the first time because of it. This moment is a parallel between an event that occurred earlier, where his EVA went into Berserk mode and injured the girl, who was rescued by Gendo Ikari. As a reminder of the feat, Rei keeps Gendo's broken glasses in his apartment. After this, the character ends up being a little more in the background, until episode 23, where he sacrifices himself along with his EVA to defeat Armisael and save Shinji. This incarnation of Rei has no recollection of the sacrifice of King II and is distant from Shinji again. In addition, she has a more embittered personality, questioning what would be its usefulness since her EVA had been destroyed. She also shows resentful towards Gendo, symbolically representing this after breaking the glasses she kept with her. During The End of Evangelion, she also shows resentment towards Gendo, Rei is taken by Gendo to the Central Dogma Terminal to be merged with Lillith and Adam to initiate Third Impact, being used as a tool for Gendo to take control of the situation. However, she rejects him and resolves to merge alone, thus leaving it up to Shinji to decide the fate of humanity. Then, all souls are assimilated to the instrumentality, commanded by Rei and a projection of Kaworu, possibly coming from the fusion with Adam. This is concerned with the well-being of humanity, meeting the wishes of Shinji when he decides to leave the instrumentality and giving the same opportunity of choice to any other individual.When Shinji reaches the beach after leaving the sea of LCL, he, rei's giant body gradually falls apart, with his head expending from it and being split in half.
