He married Adelaide, daughter of William III, Duke of Aquitaine, in 970, but failed to extend his influence in the south. He allied himself with the German emperors Otto II and Otto III, and the Archbishop of Reims, Adalbero, against the Carolingian king Lothar and his son Louis V. After the death of Louis V in 987, Hugues Capet was elected king of France by the assembly of Frankish magnates, with the help of Adalbero, who convinced them that the crown was elective and not hereditary. He was crowned at Noyon on July 5, 987, and founded the Capetian dynasty, which ruled France for nearly nine centuries. His reign was marked by the constant struggle against Charles of Lorraine, the last Carolingian claimant, who was imprisoned in 991, and the rivalry between Eudes I, Count of Blois, and Fulk Nerra, Count of Anjou, whom he supported. He also faced a conspiracy in 993, led by the Bishop of Laon, who tried to deliver him and his son Robert to Otto III. He managed to survive these challenges and secured the succession of his son, who became Robert II. He died in Paris on October 14, 996, and was buried at the Saint Denis Basilica.
