Xiao's karmic debt is never explained what “karmic debt” really is, but it seems to be a kind of dark energy that consumes the user as they take lives. Karmic debt also affects those around the Yaksha, which is why Xiao is so reluctant to stick around others. Xiao relentlessly slaughtered the endless, impure manifestations of their vengeful souls, but in doing so, he caused them to fracture. Eventually, these fragments of their hatred were able to taint Xiao's own soul. The only way to eradicate such hatred is to accept the karmic debt it brings. Xiao was once enslaved by an evil god and suffered immensely under his rule until finally regaining his freedom at Rex Lapis' hand. Xiao's powers were highly regarded by the adepti and he seemed to vanquish all manner of evil demons with consummate ease. The only thing Xiao can tolerate is Almond Tofu. The texture of the meal reminds him of the dreams he used to eat during his demon-slaying stint as a Yaksha. Before that, he was forced to kill when he was imprisoned by an evil god. One aspect is that the years of intense, never-ending battle against the remnants of defeated gods have led to him resigning himself to the fact that fighting is all he is good at. The other aspect is that the remnants have a negative effect on him, while the constant killing places a karmic burden on him, causing him mental and spiritual anguish.
