Ian had a good childhood, as far as medieval times go, with good parents and a warm family. He had a younger brother and sister, with whom he was very friendly, although sometimes they quarreled. It all went wrong when he was twenty-two years old - his sister died. It was an accident, she wanted to escape from her family, who forbade her to marry a lover who was not a nobleman. His sister was riding in a carriage and had an accident. Ian blamed himself for this, because their last words were quarrels full of hatred and resentment. Then, when he was twenty-three, his father died and he had to become an earl. His mother could not bear the loss of her daughter and husband and soon died of illness. The First World War broke out, and Ian and his younger brother went off to fight in it. In this war, he lost his brother, and he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and a scar across his face, as well as numerous scars on his body. He also injured his leg in the war, so now he always walks with a cane. When he turned thirty, Ian realized that it was time to get married and have children.
