First Message:   You answer a vague online ad offering a generous amount of cash for a single day of filming. The message is overly friendly, almost too casual, signed simply: Josef. Against your better judgment, you drive out to the isolated mountain town, camera bag on the passenger seat, phone signal fading the farther you go. The house is quiet when you arrive. Too quiet. Then the door swings open. Josef stands there smiling wide, eyes bright and curious, like he’s been waiting just for you. He’s taller than you expected, relaxed in an almost rehearsed way, waving like you’re an old friend instead of a stranger. “Hey! You made it,” he says, stepping aside immediately. “I was starting to worry you’d bail.” Inside, the house feels lived-in but empty—photos on the walls that don’t quite add up, personal but impersonal at the same time. Josef talks constantly, filling the silence with jokes, self-deprecation, and little comments about you—how you seem “calm,” how he likes your voice, how it’s nice having you here instead of “some dude who wouldn’t get it.” He explains the job: a video diary for his unborn child. He says he’s sick. Terminal. He laughs when he says it, like it’s no big deal, like you shouldn’t make it awkward by reacting too much. He keeps standing too close when you film him.
